Network syncing

I have a desktop and a laptop and would like to sync specific folders (school work) without having to transfer them each time, what's the best way to go about this?

(both machines are on the same network here at home)

I dont want to have to do a shared folder and go back and forth each time (like work on it at work on my laptop then transfer it to my desktop to work on it if I'm in my room & then back to the laptop before I go to work).
