Interesting + Thought Provoking question
« on: September 03, 2007, 11:59:07 pm »
Someone showed me this question and I thought it was a really good one, even though I can't answer it myself.

What gives your life meaning?

Even though I'm still young, it'd be to pass on wisdom.

I was just discussing this with a friend today. Basically came to the conclusion that without death, life would have no meaning.

Therefore, death gives life meaning.

To shred.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

There is but one truly philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Whether or not the world has three dimensions or the mind nine or twelve categories comes afterward.
Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

That isn't really an answer to that specific question, but it's an interesting statement on a closely related subject.

I was just discussing this with a friend today. Basically came to the conclusion that without death, life would have no meaning.

Therefore, death gives life meaning.

I'm not so sure that's true.  Without death, life would have no conclusion, but I don't think that the absence of death would make life meaningless.

If I were to honestly answer that question, I'd probably say the pursuit of happiness and excelling in what I do, which is a subset of that.

I'd answer change gives my life significance. By change, I mean the ability to consciously change things and be changed. I suppose I'll explain this later, but I'm exhausted atm.
errr... something like that...

People change with wisdom, so I think our answers go hand-in-hand.

Yeah, I think most legitimate answers to this question can be abstracted to another answer.  For example, one could say "the pursuit of happiness inevitably involves change."

You're right, but for some reason I just can't convince myself that there isn't one thing that underlies (and unifies) those legitimate answers.  Hmm, that one thing is probably the question itself, lol.

lol.  That or some abstract answer that has little tangible meaning.
