hi from my iTouch!

So yep I got an iPod touch. I have to say I'm liking it except that typing is a little awkward. It's still cool as hell!!!
I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Then use any number of solutions to unlock it, and use it on whichever network you like.

I know a lot of people where I live that have done exactly that, since that's the only way you can get them in Canada.

With a GSM phone I believe that AT&T and TMobile are your only choices.

Well, AT&T doesn't exist in Canada, so that's not an option. Rogers or Telus are the biggest choices here.

There are a seemingly infinite number of small GSM providers, but T-Mobile and ATT are the only big ones in the US. Sprint and Verizon pretty much have a lockdown on CDMA, although there are tons of alternates for CDMA as well.

Then there's UMTS, which is like the bastard 3G child of a number of CDMA and GSM technologies.

Telus apparently sucks balls. I haven't heard one positive thing from any of their customers. Rogers AT&T is apparently pretty good... but I get better reception with MTS.

BTW, Cingular and Verizon are both GSM.

Cingular and AT&T merged; they're both AT&T now.

Verizon is CDMA, not GSM.

[edit] Of course you get better reception with UMTS; it's VoIP! Same goes for EV-DO enabled CDMA phones.

Did you get the 16gb?  And is it even worth buying right now?  Aren't they just going to come out with a larger one for about the same price anyway?

I actually have not seen any of the new iPods in real life yet.  Only on the Internet.

Myndy, do you have any problems with watching dark movie scenes?  I have read articles that say that there have been problems with the iTouch when it comes to watching dark scenes in movies, and I was curious if your iTouch had that problem.  Another question I have is: have you tried to listen to music and open up 2-3 tabs on the web browser?  If so, have you experinced any problems there?

problem with harddrives are more moving parts, more battery consumption, and slower reads.

When flash memory becomes so cheap that they can beat 50Gb for the same price, I'll buy a solid state iPod touch. Until then, I want one with a harddrive.

The battery life so far on the solid-state device is incredible as opposed to my 5th-gen 80gb.
Myndy, do you have any problems with watching dark movie scenes?
Problems not so much as a bit of an annoyance.  There's something of a negative glare when looking straight on at a dark movie scene.  However, it can be avoided by looking at a slight angle.

Have you seen how incredibly tiny the new iPod "classics" are? The new 80gb model is smaller than the previous 30gb!
This bad boy is about as this as the display part of my RAZR V3t.  Very hawt.

Then use any number of solutions to unlock it, and use it on whichever network you like.
As other people have pointed out, it's GSM, and while I do have t-mobile, the wireless internet service supported by iPhone is 3G, which sucks monkey balls as well.  If I get an iPhone, it'll be some time down the line.

Yes, I got the 16gb.  It's definitely worth it.  By far the best portable music player I've ever used.  And if I used the logic of the bigger for less money argument, I'd never buy any kind of technology.

Bigger to an extent.  I would want atleast 30gb.  I would want to be able to store all my music plus videos and anime onto my iTouch without having to worry about replacing old videos when I want a new one on there.

However!  I really really want an iTouch!  So I don't know how long I can wait. :O

P.S.
Can you format any video to mpeg4?

First I just want to clarify some jargon. GSM can mean either the group of technologies (including UMTS), or specifically the 2G network (the predecessor to UMTS).

Is it UMTS, or one of the other 50 million GSM 3g technologies? It doesn't even have a GSM fallback at all? I hear there are tons of deadspots, but I've never used it. In the CDMA world, you can use the CDMA2000 protocol over 1xRTT and it's considered 2.5G, because you get all of the features but none of the broadband.

My Verizon phone has 1xRTT (2g) and EV-DO (3g), and it's pretty rare that I don't have a signal on both. In the year that I've had my phone, I've only had one call dropped, and it's because I was moving from an area of only EV-DO coverage to an area of only 1xRTT coverage, for which there's no mechanism for switchoff.

[edit] Additionally, it has an 802.11 card in it; both CDMA and GSM providers are moving toward a [tradesecret] goal of enabling all ATs to be only 802.11 enabled, so they can VPN to the network and do VoIP calls similar to the way 3g networks work. Cell towers would broadcast a sort of 802.11 tunnel. [/tradesecret]

Yes.

that sucks, considering most places aren't wifi enabled...And public places that are usually require you to pay (ie. Starbucks)

What? Since when does Starbucks charge for internet access?

Even in places where you need a web browser to authorize your device for using the network, the thing has a full web browser - they made a big deal of that in the keynote.

Just to let you know Myndy, the negative black is a defect in the touch screen. Apple is replacing them with new ones.

A batch of iPod Touch Units and iPhone Units were affected by this.

Reminds me of the first generation batch of Nanos that had screens that scratched easily.  Considering I was about to buy a Nano back then and didn't b/c of this problem... and again when I'm looking at getting an iPod I'm completely turned off once again.  >_<;

It's always a bad idea to buy the initial release of any Apple product. I waited six months to get my macbook, and it never had the notorious random shutdown problem. It did get pretty hot, though - I've had the motherboard replaced since then, and now it runs cool and quiet.

A believe pretty much anywhere you go they charge you for WIFI access... except hotels.
Well, 4-5 star hotels no it's usually not free.  I know that when I went to the Omni Shoreham in DC it was not free, at least in the rooms it wasn't.
I tend to edit my topics and replies frequently.

Wow, I've never been to or heard of starbucks charging for their internet service. I've heard of them denying freeloaders, though.

Every Starbucks I've ever tried to get on their internet with, requires a starbucks card or some kind of subscription. Keep in mind I haven't tried it much, but it's definitely a commonplace.

University campuses=free WiFi.

Yeah, that's really the only place I know of with free wifi, other then random insecure networks. My college campus requires you to have a student login,  however.

Drexel's WiFi is $34,000 per year.  On the plus side, I can get on the internet from about....1/3 of the city.  Additionally, it's a BAMF network.  4mbps wireless down = win.

Also, I can get on Cingular's (Now AT&T) WiFi anywhere they have service for free.

I'm not sure what my university's policy is on that.. I'm assuming you'd need a student login, but I'm not sure.

Did you add 3 extra zeroes to that? Or is it totally insane?

You can't get on unless you're a student, so the price of the network is the price of tuition.

Aha, so what you're saying is that it's free when you're a student.

Or that your education is free if you pay for wifi. That'd be sweet!

That's because they figure if you can afford the rooms, you can afford the internet charge.
errr... something like that...

University campuses=free WiFi.

We don't have WiFi in our dormitories so I'd only be able to use it in like the commons, post office, library and student center and I think maybe classroom buildings.

I think most of the dorms here have wireless, but there are a couple that don't (like the one I was in last year).  Their reasoning, I guess, was because it was close to some residential areas and they didn't want people tinkering with their network.  I thought that was pretty stupid since they could just walk on campus and do the same thing...

Anyway, there are probably some big fields or something where you can't get wireless here, but I know all of the buildings with classrooms have constant access.

I don't mean like, everywhere, but we get WiFi in such a large majority of the campus it's crazy.
