The Orange Box
« on: September 24, 2007, 11:02:53 pm »
On Portal:

Holy crap this game was fun but a bit short at an average first play time of two hours.  I rate this game a 10/10 for unique ideas and a very funny storyline involving a Disk Operating System and Cake.  :)

On Team Fortress 2:
I bought it the other day and damn, I've been playing it only for a day and a half and I'm already addicted.  If anyone is considering getting it, please do!

If you buy the Orange Box from Valve, you'll get it (Team Fortress 2), Portal (Another awesome++; game, based on the style of Narbacular Drop), Half Life, Episode 1, and Episode 2.  If you already have any of the listed above you'll also get a gift invite for a friend.  If you send them the gift invite for a game such as HL2, they get the full game forever (Could be good selling to friends, although this is against the terms and everyone who is anyone in games should have already played HL1..)!

Anyways, back to the topic of TF2, it's got the same 9 classes the original Team Fortress Classic had but with a lot of modifications.  It's pretty damn balanced and if you get bored of playing once class, switching classes (of which you can do anytime you die) completely changes the feel of the game.  Over-all 9/10 game.  :)

So, who else has played Portal?  I'm sure (at least Sidoh, I think) will find it fun.

Seriously, how'd you post this review 2.5 weeks before it came out?

I plan on getting the Orange Box one of these days; it just seems like a great deal. :)

I haven't yet, but it looked awesome when I saw it.  Any chance I could rip the ISO from you or something? :)

Are there grenades in TF2? I remember the beta didn't have grenades or medics :P.

The only grenades in the game are from the Demomans Grenade Launcher or the Demoman's Remote Mine stuff.  Also, the Medic is in the game and is a fun class to play.  :)

it looks like a marketing ploy to sell more half life 2, which is a few years old. im pretty sure the portals game is old too, because i remember seeing it a long time ago, somewhere. TF2 looks cool, though.

I think Portals advertised in relatively obscure places for a pretty long time.  I think this is the first time that it was officially and publicly released.

Who would of thought a sequel would continue a game?

Portal was created by the entire Narbacular Drop team and the Half-Life story writer.

All right, it's 5 games in one package. You get Half-life 2, Half-Life 2: episode 1, Half-Life 2: episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. From what I understand, the only old games you're getting are Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1. The rest are brand new.

Followup to HL2 are given in episodic content, so far each Episode has introduced new revisions of the Source Engine and new levels of playability.

I have not played Episode 2 yet, but Episode 1 aside from being slightly brief was really awesome.
They also fill the game with developer commentary so you get to see the making of each feature as you experience it in the game.

This comment on slashdot pretty much sums up my view on this. Stuff is cheaper over seas, people buy it. I can bet all the physical parts of the release (the packaging, manual, CD/DVD, etc) were made in some third world country at dirt cheap rates, and they have the audacity to deactivate copies of the game people bought from one of these countries? Absolutely ridiculous. Not only is it a douche move, it should be illegal.

You wont be disappointed. Tf2 is awesome, each class plays so differently and balanced that you wont get bored easily (plus it is highly addictive too lol). Portal is fun for the few hours it takes to beat, and still fun for a long time after. I couldn't tell you if hl2:ep2 is any good, but I've heard it is awesome :D

Well, I finally got unlazy enough to do a really slow go-through of the level.  I don't rush at all.  Seriously.  In fact, I even timed one of the GLaDOS speeches to repeat the word "Drugs" over and over at the end.  Oddly enough you only hear two of GLaDOS's speeches in the demo - Weird.

Here's the demo file: http://maide.ca/private/level15.dem .  You will need Portal installed to watch it. Place it in your Steam accounts Portal folder (DRIVEHERE:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\ACCOUNTNAMEHERE\portal\portal by default).  Start Portal, and in the developers console (Shortcut is ` or ~ by default) type: playdemo level15.dem .

Just for fun, I'll show you my speed run: http://maide.ca/private/15_speed.dem .

This is impossible
I'm making a note here:
"DO NOT ATTEMPT"

It's hard to overstate
How hard this game is.

Aperture Science
The achievement cannot be unlocked.

It's far too hard for all of us
Except the ones who cheated.

And there's no sense trying
Any of the gold tests.
You just keep on trying
Till you collapse of stress,
And nothing gets done
And it runs out of fun
For the people who just want some points.

I'm getting so angry...
I don't even want to try 18.
Even though I want to get the achievement.

It just can't be done.
It's far too hard for words to describe.
I need to drink fifteen coffees
Before I put the disc in.

Now the least steps tests
Are a massive waste of time
And on Test Chamber 17
Try to get gold time!
I'm so glad that I learned
The achievement can't be earned
For the people who
just want some points.

Go ahead and try them.
I think I prefer to sleep with women...
Maybe you'll find someone else
To do them?
Maybe you'll succeed?
That was a joke! HAHA! FAT CHANCE!

Anyway I've given up.
It's making me have a stroke.

Look at me still talking
When there's other stuff to do!
When I payed Ā£40,
I'm glad I got Team Fortress 2.

I've got to play Half-Life some more,
And find all the Lamba Cores,
For the people who just want some points.

And believe me I just want some points.
I'm playing Half-Life and I'm getting points.
I'm having fun and I'm getting points.
When you're seizing I'll be getting points.
And when you're dead I'll be still getting points.

Getting points.

(Getting points)

I laughed when I read this.  I am one of the few people to have the achievement.  :)
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

You asked "which one?", implying you wanted the name and that you knew enough about the game to know what he was talking about. :P

That acid looks like it's Mountain Dew, in which case I'd swim across. And probably drink a bunch.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.
