Emergency maintenance on Darkside
« on: April 15, 2005, 02:27:24 am »
Funny thing just happened.... [see bottom for summary]

I'm sitting in my room reading, minding my own business, when all the lights went out.  "Great!" I think, and I plug my usb light into my laptop.  I then help my mom find candles. I mean, at 2am, who'd be asleep?

Anyway, we get that all going, I'm enjoying reading by usb-light (kinda like reading by flashlight, except heavier), and the lights come back on.  I was kind of upset, because that normally means I have to go start Darkside back up, lest I get yelled at in the morning.

So I fight with him to boot (he's always been a bitch), and finally he boots.  I run mysql and httpsd just fine.  Then I run javaop, and it won't connect.  "Fine," I think, "my router is mad".  So I switch over to Slayer, who works just fine.  I do a "ifconfig -a" on Darkside, no network cards.  I turn him off, pull it out, clean it, fight with him to boot, and still no network cards.  "Hmm!" I think, "I don't want to leave the site offline!"

So, after seconds of sleepy pondering, I figured it out.  I yanked out Darksides harddrive, and stuck it in Pie.  I also stuck Pie's harddrive in Darkside, but he's turned off.

The bottom line is, Darkside's specs have changed:
old --> new
266mhz --> 433mhz
256mb ram --> 64mb ram (I'll fix that tomorrow)

So yeah, this is kinda weird.  I don't know how I feel about swapping the harddrive (and, therefore, names) of my computers.  I'm going to dig out another NIC tomorrow and get the original Darkside running, but I'm going to put some stuff onto Pie (web, in particular).  Darkside will continue to be a "test" box, like it was originally intended, and Pie will be the production box.

=========
SUMMARY
=========
I put Darkside's brain into Pie's body.

Also, I finally fixed the clock.  This forum is now on CST (GMT-6) rather than DST (Darkside Standard Time), which was somewhere around GMT-4.8

Haha @ Time. I wanna get a USB light, but I've never seen one.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

Ok, I moved around some hardware.  Now Darkside has 256 and Pie has 64.

Also, Pie is now the DMZ Host.  And I'm going to restrict user accounts on Darkside.

Pie = test machine
Darkside = production server

At the moment, no, not hosting.  Unless it's urgently important, give me some time.  If it IS urgently important, I can rig something up.

Also, use port 22 for Pie, and right now there's no way to access Darkside or Slayer remotely for anybody except me.

Production server = not-test server.  For software/programs that ought to be reliable.

Why not? :P

Some does and some doesn't, generally a darker red wine goes good with sweeter food.

There are a ton of rules to matching wine to food.  But I don't know any :)

I have 6 computers, 3 are definitely not servers.  The others serve various things depending on my needs at the time.  Only 2 actual dedicate "servers", though.
