The panels won't expand to fit the full screen, odd.  Thoughts off hand?  I'm going to play with it a bit more once I (maybe) get this environment installed

Right click on the panel, go to properties and make sure the "Expand" box is checked.

It is.  I figure I'll attempt to find the correct drivers for my Gateway instead of using the generic settings

I'd be really surprised if it was a driver issue.  There's probably just something wrong with gnome's settings.

Oh so frustrated.

Cant find the roblem with the resolution, cant seem to get compiz-fusion to actually work, sigh (everytime I click custom under the compiz appearance preferences I get "Desktop effects could not e enabled)

typing compiz in the terminal shows "blacklisted pciid", I assume my graphics (integrated intel shit on my laptop) are blacklisted?
Google suggests: "XV does not play with XAA under compiz, only with EXA"

What video card is it?

I had trouble getting the resolution properly set on one of my laptops with Ubuntu as well.  I think I had to manually change some stuff in xorg.conf.

I googled stuff that pointed me to xorg.conf, I didnt find anything similar (it was stuff about a TV setting).



And now my awesome Windows disk wont boot so I can go back to Vista.  Sigh.  Maybe I'll just shoot it.



Off to check out this xorg shit again

xorg.conf is the settings file for X, which is the window system you're using.  There are all kinds of settings in xorg.conf, but among them are resolution, which display drivers to use, etc.  It's located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  I believe each user can have their own xorg.conf in their home directory, but since ubuntu uses gdm, I'm not sure it's loaded.  I'd just edit the one in /etc/X11, but make sure you back the working one up.

After updating ubuntu (204 files) it won't load an image anymore, yay ::).  Its all command prompt.  Time to reinstall

No....image?  Take care with words in Linux!  Image often means the kernel image.  If you mean you can't get X running, restore your backed-up (back-upped?) copy of the xorg.conf file.

Yeah, what rabbit said is very true.  The proper phrase you're looking for is "gdm didn't start".  Reinstalling is probably the best option in this case since it's probably less painful than troubleshooting, but if you had stuff on there, checking log files is probably what you'd want to do.

Whenever you change something major in a conf file, it's a good idea to make a backup of the original in case you mess anything up.

I knew what I changed ... just wouldn know how to get back to the file to re(?) change it.


Windows is what works for my not-so-computery-mind ... I'll stick to that
