Cigars?
« on: March 29, 2008, 09:03:29 pm »
Anyone smoke 'em?

The ones I've found, so far (I ain't had many), that are decent are Romeo Y Juliets.  They're Honduran.

Thoughts?

Tobacco is bad.  It (and even the smoke) makes my throat close up and I tend to approach death if I hang around too long.

My roommate smokes them a lot, and I think Romeo Y Juliets are his favorites. I'll smoke one occasionally but I see cigars as too much of a hassle, if I need a nicotine fix I'll just smoke some cigarettes (but that's basically just when I'm drinking) or pop in a snus (I do this on normal days and when drinking ;) ). Cigars can be nice though, they just take too long in my opinion.

snus?  Those pansy assed little pouch things?  Dip like a man, man.

Take too long?  Cause you have to cut the end and then light it?  Sure it takes a while, but they're so tasty.

I usually only buy Swisher sweets, the mini-cigarette ones, as well as the blunt, I actually just smoked a few yesterday when I got shitfaced but I still have my delicious peach blunt.

Some Romeo Y Julietas are supposed to be Cubans that are labeled differently to get into the country. I've smoked a Cuban though, and I can say that it's not even a worthwhile comparison. I don't really like cigars, but I'd smoke a Cuban way before I touched a Romeo Y Julieta. For once I agree with Trust though, sitting there smoking a cigar for hours is so much more of a hassle then the few minutes it takes to smoke a stogie.

Agreed. Hookah is amazing, and hookah bars provide a nice social atmosphere.

Yeah but you don't have to spit with snus, which is good for when you're in a place where you can't spit. (i.e. class) Plus you can get a nice buzz if you pack two and there's no mess..plus the frost is really tasty, like gum.

By takes too long I mean to smoke the whole thing.

As of this year you aren't allowed to dip in class, but they don't know if you use snus. (Our classes have, max, 25-30 kids..and that's general core freshman classes, so you can't get away with it like if you were in a class of 300)

Your school actually has a RULE against it?  That's hilarious.

Here it's just socially unacceptable to do (unless you're in the ag college I'll assume, ha) so no worries.

The college banned tobacco use in all school-owned buildings. Until this year you were able to smoke in your dorms and this little pub thing we have for made-to-order food/student center. This includes dipping in class.

In my dormitory we have heat detectors instead of smoke detectors so you can still smoke with no problem, and nobody is going to really care if you do. And of course the no dipping rule is not going to be followed in dorm rooms.

It doesn't affect anyone else, probably because of the way our dorms are set up. Most times people will just either open their window or go into the hall and open a window. When people are drinking in my room and want a cigarette I'll usually just have them go out to the hall and open the window right outside of my door, that way I don't have to smell my room up and they don't have to walk two floors down to go outside. People also are able to smoke other stuff in their room without any problems as well, I mean just open a window. Not many people are going to care anyway. A school about 15 minutes away, on the other hand, you couldn't get away with any of that. You can get a ticket for even smoking on campus, all they have is designated smoking gazebos.

I guess technically only in dorms. The school has amended all of the rules for insurance purposes, for about a month they stopped selling tobacco on campus but enough students were unhappy with that decision that they reversed it.

That's actually not true. Even if you get the smoke out, you still have all the chemicals in the room from the smoke.

There are "no smoking zones" around campus here, apparently, but I couldn't tell you where they were.  People seem to smoke wherever they please.

I have no idea if we have rules about "dipping", but as long as they're not making a mess or sitting next to me, I don't have a problem with it.

Yeah, I think that's a law here too.  There's also one about no smoking in restraints, I think, but I don't really follow that stuff.  People are supposed to smoke really far away from the dorms here, but most of them sit right by the door because it's cold.  Assholes. :(

That really grosses me out too.

I love cigars, and find them fun to smoke.

The taste is great, and so is atmosphere of smoking them.

So far, the best I've had is the cuban my friend got for ~15$ in Belize on Friday. Very good stuff, so smooth and tasty.

Dip tobacco, comes shredded or standard, you 'pack a lip' where you put the tobacco between your bottom lip and teeth and suck, but don't swallow, then you spit into a container, the tobacco gets absorbed through your lip and you get a "drunk" feeling.

Is basically a can of tobacco, you put some in the pocket between gums and lip, usu front bottom.

Nope, can't think of a single person here that does anything with tobacco besides smoking it (not counting gum/patches).

I'm not even sure where you'd buy that kind of thing here, or if anybody even sells it. I know that it's illegal in some countries due to health dangers (illegal in most of Europe, I read), maybe that's the cast here? Dunno.

Yeah it's sold in two locations on campus: the bookstore and the student center/pub thing I talked about earlier. There was a huge student outcry when it was banned, and people met with the President and whatnot and it got reversed.

Dunno.

Heh, has the same sorts of dangers as smoking.

Similar, at least.

I'd bet that a lot of people who use it don't realize that, though.

..Huh.. Interesting.. and I thought most everyone knew what it was... I've known what it was since I was in 7th grade.
I knew what chew and snuff were.  Never heard the term "dipping" before though.

Generally the risk of lip and mouth cancer are intensely amplified.

I'm not so sure about that, but I wouldn't be too surprised to meet someone who thought it was "safer".

It was taught in the grade school "anti-drug" programs that it was no safer than smoking.  I know they did away with "D.A.R.E." because drug usage seemed to increase after it was introduced (lol), but I assume there's still some form of "drug education".

Haha, I've probably heard it because I went to a high school filled with hicks.

Generally the risk of lip and mouth cancer are intensely amplified.

Yeah, for sure, but neither of those are as dangerous as the most serious threat you encounter when you "dip": you look like a redneck.

it has it's own problems, but of course using smokeless tobacco doesn't hurt your lungs. Furthermore if you use snus, it's even safer than regular dip. It's made in Sweden and is steam cured instead of smoke cured so there are less carcinogenic  additives plus you keep it refrigerated which keeps some chemical reaction from happening which otherwise would cause some cancer causing chemical to form.

ok, I give up, what's "wtb"?

And in any case, I think this thread is fine, the initial question was answered by the only people who could really provide an answer, and another discussion along the same lines continued, basically to a conclusion. If you split it now, you'd probably end up with two threads with no further traffic instead of one. :P

We need more mods to catch these things earlier is what I'm getting at :)

There wasn't really anything to catch, the conversation sort of shifted naturally, just like it does in real life.

Plus, it's pansy as all get out.

...I do miss the taste of the tobacco when I drink sometimes, eh well, it was pricey (as is smoking).

Nah it's just convenient. I've done skoal and like snus a lot more. It may be seen as "pansy" but you can do it anywhere, there's no mess, it's easy to drink since it's in your upper lip, and it's not as bad for you.

You can always smoke when you drink. I think overall people smoke more when they drink, and I don't know why. I know when I drink if I don't have any cigarettes on my own I'll bum some. I think I bummed 7 from a friend two Saturdays ago. When people are drunk though nobody cares about giving them out, and I know I've given out several to my friends and random people. I guess it's because the nicotine increases the effects of the alcohol.
