Haha, yeah.  Encrypted chat is great, but it's pretty dumb if there's no purpose.  I use OTR with pidgin, but that's because I occasionally do talk about things I consider private.

haha, no. Voice on IRC refers to ability to chat, more or less. When a room is designated as such (+m) only people who have voice (+v) and ops can chat.

i doubt they're stored in plain-text. the protocol being plain-text doesn't mean that they have to be stored that way, either. it just depends what services they're using. but yeah, like newby said, it's just a nickname on a large public irc network - choose something that you don't mind if somebody else found it out.
