Happy Earth Day!
« on: April 22, 2008, 06:34:55 pm »
The day when SUV-driving trash-making non-recycling meat-eating people can stop and pretend they care about the Earth (and even believe themselves!), while still continuing their normal habits. Woo!

this just in, eating meat is linked to global warming.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.... whoa..... whoa.

So now that you've been a vegan for what, like, 5 months, you can suddenly have a high horse about meat eating folk?

Are sharks evil too?  They eat meat.

Fuck yeah, they're evil. Have you ever seen Jaws? Anyway, what iago is saying is that because so many people want to eat meat, the demand is really high, too. Cows produce a ton of methane, which is actually a horrible greenhouse gas. Also, it takes much more energy to produce a pound of meat over a pound of plants that taste okay. Cows are just too delicious to not eat!
errr... something like that...

Oh yeah? I threw my collection of old newspapers in a normal garbage bin. I also made yogurt using normal milk AND dehydrated milk AND some yogurt.

8 months. But why's it matter? I made a major lifestyle change based on my beliefs. I wouldn't call it being on a "high horse", I'd call it "pointing out a fact".

It's farming livestock that's bad for the environment, not meat eating itself. But eating meat from farms is pretty much a given. Sharks rarely farm their food. :P

I don't believe you!  Gas prices went up again ($3.14 to $3.28), so obviously it was AntiEarth Day, at the least (or maybe it was just Monday).

Well, cars are bad for the Earth, so higher gas prices are good for the earth. It makes sense!

And incidentally, gas passed $5/gal a couple weeks ago. :-o

It's all about cutting down and making strides. When possible, I don't use plastic and I recycle what I do use. I try not to use electricity (I replaced all my lights with energy-saver bulbs, even though I don't pay for electricity), plus, my city has relatively clean electricity (hydro). And finally, I buy locally grown produce/products when I can.

I do my best to live cleanly.

Energy saver bulbs?  Those spirally fluorescent ones?  Yeah, so you're saving some energy but endangering everyone with mercury.  Cool.

pfft, that's an Australian news site. We all know that everything is the opposite there!

<edit> and also, it's not just the greenhouse gas emissions that the meat industry releases -- it also takes a hell of a lot more land than fruit/vegetables, and also the disposal of the waste. :P

Energy saver bulbs?  Those spirally fluorescent ones?  Yeah, so you're saving some energy but endangering everyone with mercury.  Cool.

My father, who's an analytical chemist, told me that the really only dangerous or toxic form of mercury was what fish digested. He told me the reason, I will try to get it exactly how he said..

He said that the mercury fish digest broke down a little, and bonded with a sulfate in the fishes stomach. He said that mercury sulfate has a low LD50, and that you don't only have to digest it to die, you can also inhale it.

He said other that that type of mercury, it's not too bad.

Maybe they're a little more credible, but I'm cooler.  I wasn't saying it's not bad, I was just saying it's not the worst. I mean, you can look at the LD50 for mercury sulfate versus mercury. I don't really care to, considering I don't want to eat either of them.

Mercuric sulfate: ORAL (LD50): Acute: 57 mg/kg [Rat]. DERMAL (LD50): Acute: 625mg/kg [Rat]
Mercury: The LD50 values in animals for elemental mercury range from 10 to 40 mg/kg (WHO 1976)

That's the best info I could find.. Mercuric sulfate was easy, but I had a lot of trouble finding plain Mercury.

Dimethyl mercury (or any other organic mercury) beats those two any day. It takes a drop or so on exposed skin to kill a person.
