I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but I saw it yesterday and I really enjoyed it.  I suggest going to go see it. :D

The once grove of splendor,
Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

I liked it; but I wish it was more ass-kicking, and less story-telling.

But, as it was the first in a series so there will be more ass-kicking in the next ones. :D

I heard that Black Sabbath endorsed the movie and retconned the inspiration for the song Iron Man to be about this movie or something? Did it go along with the story of the song, or what?

The movie is about Marvels' Ironman (roughly, anyway :P).  It had very little to do with Black Sabbath other than the credit song..

Well, the original song was quite the opposite -- they took care NOT to make it about the comic book character:

Quote
The lyrics [of Iron Man] concern a champion of humanity who travels Time, presumably to ensure "the future of Mankind" — his original mission was to save our species. We learn that this champion unfortunately encountered a "Great Magnetic Field," turning him into steel and rendering him immobile. He has been in this state for so long that humanity has forgotten his original identity and his original mission. Rather than hailing him as a hero, the human race now regards him as an oddity, little more than an enigmatic statue from another age. The first few lines of the song are the musings of curious passersby, wondering if he's alive or dead, if he can see, if he can move, et cetera. Although the exact nature of his transformation is not elucidated, we know that Iron Man is not solid steel, but is in perhaps an organic/inorganic state, in which he can still perceive the physical world and can still think, but cannot take action. Because humanity has forgotten everything he's done for them in the past, Iron Man has grown increasingly bitter and plans his vengeance upon the ungrateful human race. Evidently, his bizarre state of suspended animation is only temporary — when Iron Man regains his freedom to move, he "kills the people he once saved" in a dreadful manner.

The title of the song was conceived by Ozzy Osbourne; As a child Ozzy would spray paint Ironman and Ozzy Ironman everywhere he went. Geezer Butler took to writing the lyrics around the title, but was careful not to make it about the comic book character so as to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit.

Right now it's the number one selling moving in America. Inside of the theater, I sat next to a huge, loud black lady that could barely fit in her seat that munched on a large bag of popcorn and soda all for herself. An entire church group sat on my right. I'm starting to think, "Wait a second... Best selling movie, stereotypical Americans watching on both sides...? Don't tell me..."

The only way for a movie to make as much money in America as that one did was to pack in with American stereotypes. They glorified the killing of "evil" terrorists, while saving middle eastern civilians. Any time an American citizen was about to die, everything would turn dramatic. American kill count: 5-6. Terrorist kill count: 100+.

Any product placement further pissed me off. The main character, a billionaire, was using a cheap LG flip phone. When he asked for an "American burger" upon his return from the Middle East, he had Burger King.

Overall, it had great special effects and your normal superhero movie plot, but the whole, "We do it the American way!" thing pissed me off to the point where I could barely enjoy the movie.

Heh, I remember seeing the preview for this a couple months ago and thinking about how they're appealing to the lowest common denominator. :)

I had the same problem with it.  I still enjoyed the movie; I think they did a great job with the effects, plot, etc.  However, the whole "American way" thing did take away from it a bit.

Heh, I remember seeing the preview for this a couple months ago and thinking about how they're appealing to the lowest common denominator. :)

Yep, they definitely did.  Overall, though, I thought it was still worth watching.

Well, I wasn't going to bother anyways, because I don't care about actiony movies, or movies based on comic books, those kinds of things have never appealed to me. So nothing really changes. :)

I thought that would be rather obvious. The people who made the movie were looking to make a very well selling movie, and as such appealed to the culture of American mainstream society. Not to say they're right in doing that, just that they're making monies.

All they need to appeal to Canadians is show one box of Kroff Dinner in one of the backgrounds... I'd go see what the movie was aboot if it had that.

No one said they made an observation of something subtle.  It was obvious, but that doesn't mean it can't bother us.

Clarification: I thought it'd be rather obvious that a movie selling to a majority of American society would be filled with aspects of "mainstream" American culture.

Also, I'm not saying it can't bother you. It bothers me. I'm just not at all surprised by it.

People like you guys bug me. "Iron Man" isn't one of those movies that's supposed to leave you thinking (unlike "V for Vendetta" for example). It's just a movie that you go into, turn your brain off, watch, and have massive amounts of fun. People commented on the same thing you guys did, and I just found it really annoying.

It matters very little to me that you "have a bone to pick" with my criticisms.  The glorification of "the American way", though, irked me, but I did enjoy the movie.  Your ability to "shut off your brain and enjoy the movie" does not necessitate the same behavior in others...

It seems to me that turning off your brain on a movie like this is an incredibly bad idea. That just leaves you more open to the negative effects of this kind of stuff.

how come there aren't 3 page discussions on movies that are the exact opposite of this? (i.e. Jarhead) Either way it's meeting some sort of ideological agenda, yall just happen to disagree with this one.

There was a 23-post discussion on Jarhead. Not sure if any controversy was discussed, though (I haven't seen it).

Well, I stand corrected on the example (I just picked a liberally biased war movie and that was the first that came to mind) but the rest of my post still seems pretty accurate. I think it's great that they're releasing movies with pro-American/pro-Iraq sentiment.

I disagree with any mindless subliminal ideological agenda, especially when it's supposed to be a super hero movie. I hate most democrats more than I hate most republicans, but that's not saying much.
