Yeah, I wasn't particularly hip to the idea that the kid would rape her, but you never know.  There's old people porn too. 

She would have likely been killed regardless of whether she had a gun, unless the burglars were wearing masks, which I don't believe was indicated.  Typically the only thing that keeps witnesses alive in armed robberies is the fact that they couldn't identify the assailants.
