Hello
« on: October 07, 2008, 01:05:08 pm »
Tell us about yourself... How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do (school/work)? Where do you work, if applicable? What kind of music do you like? Do you have a girl (boy?) friend?  Are you in any other clans? What are they like (if applicable)? Any friends around here (members or otherwise)? Why do you want to join? Have you read our rules?  What's your favourite tv show? Movie? Band? Country? Continent? Season?  Type of weather? Subject in school? Chemical? Food? Drink? Book? Author? Operating system? Phone company? Computer brand? Linux distribution? Sport? Sports team? Sporting event? Game? Style of game (board, rpg, card, etc.)? Bird? Animal? Pet?

I'm EcH. My real name is Eric, an 18 year old freshman in San Diego State University. I am American, of various northern European descent, with a height of ~6’2,” and live in East County San Diego.  I don’t have a girlfriend.

I do have friends on this forum, such as Dan (leet_muffin), Hagen (bigazndaddy), James (Newby), and Zach (towlie).

As for my favorite TV show: hell if I know; it depends on the day.

Favorite movie: Once again, it varies.  Dark Knight certainly ranks up there.  As does the first Godfather.

Favorite band: Meh, I’m into metal, though I do have tastes outside the genre.  Metallica (older stuff) is an old favorite.  And yes, much to the mockery of a couple choice pals who frequent here, I do like Korn.

Favorite country: United States of America.

Favorite continent: That really depends on in what regard.  North America is cool, I guess, though I would like to go to Europe some time.

Favorite season: The ones that involve my life.

Favorite type of weather: Basically anything not muggy and bug-ridden, though I also prefer to avoid tornadoes.

Favorite subject in school: History.

Favorite chemical: Au ftw.

Favorite food: Going to have to go w/steak, though cheeseburgers rank up there (and if price is a consideration . . .)

Favorite drink: Sprite/Sierra Mist/7UP (there is no difference) would be my favorite soda.

Favorite book: This is more difficult than favorite movie.  I could simply provide a lengthy list of the books that I have read which I felt were excellent, but no one would read that.  So I’ll just pick off a couple I’ve read recently.  Who Are We? by Samuel Huntington is a must read, and I am loving 33 Strategies of War by Robert Greene.

Favorite operating system: Not picky; whatever I am used to at the time.

Favorite phone company: Verizon gives me free talk to other people on Verizon.  Being cheap, I treasure that.

Favorite sport: Gladiatorial combat.  This is, of course, assuming I am watching rather than playing.  Seriously, though, I’m not really a sports addict, and can just enjoy whatever is around.  Maybe paintball.

I do support the local teams, though.

Style of game: Flexible and intellectually stimulating, anything that allows me to use my strengths to full force—thus, almost exclusively video games.  Particularly strategy, though sometimes I dabble in shooters, RPGs, and online text-based.

Favorite animal: Really depends on what regard the question is asking about.  All around, though, probably dog.

Favorite pet: I’ve got two dogs, Rocky and Riley, who are pretty epic.

That sounds like a good idea.

Actually, I forgot to mention that lately I have taken to laser tag.  I mean, I'm not yet skilled, but it would probably take the place of my favorite sport to play, being that I haven't done paintball in the better part of a decade.

Hello!  Why are there so many people here who like the Metal genre? :(

Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

There are just way too many sub-genres in metal. We should start breaking them up.

Because metal is popular among the geek/techie types. I suspect it's because metal isn't really mainstream, and neither are geeks, so it's kind of a rebellion against pop culture.

Or maybe it's jus that metal is so good. :)

On the Sierra Mist note, I can’t tell the difference.  Perhaps it is that I have not tasted that other thing.  Nor do I intend to.

That’s an interesting theory, though I avoid the geek label, don’t deserve the techie label, and am not rebellious against the mainstream.  Personally, I have historically been disproportionately reasonable and levelheaded, even dealing with all the idiots who disagree w/me for no good reason; also, I have, until recently, been utterly uninvolved in physical activities resembling sports.  Thus, powerful, impassioned music is perfect to balance out my life.

Plus that last thing you said.  ;)

Realistically, I doubt it.  There are all sorts of insanity, which reflect in a great many diverse regards.  In terms of musical taste, it would be no more indicative of general mental health problems to enjoy metal than classical (another favorite of mine) or gangsta rap (a genre I thoroughly dislike--I'm almost considering making it the exception to this rule in my argument), without any other factors.  Some mental illnesses may tend to make their sufferers like metal, but others may lead in opposite directions, thus defeating any correlation.

For the joke . . . you pretty well covered it.  Not sure there's much of anything I can add.

It would be between Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, Edward I, and Henry VII (that last one due more to my being a fan of Protestantism than anything else, though I know his motivations certainly were not theological).  They are not all of the good/interesting ones, but they are the ones good/interesting enough for me to remember them.

These are exclusively prior to the Union of 1707, when they ceased to be the Kings of England and became the Kings of Britain.

Either that or he was answering your question, I can't quite tell.

Anyways, there is so much metal that I'm pretty sure everyone could find a sub-genre that they enjoy. My girlfriend hated anything remotely related to metal but is now in love with power metal, and likes a lot of punkier thrash/crossover kinda stuff. I've converted so many people and exposed so many others to stuff they might never have heard before. I completely converted Newby back in the day, and I helped push iago in the right direction. I'm pretty sure I could find something that would please anybody. :)

lol.  I'm sure the "Emo elitist teenagers" bit was a troll, but it really does annoy me when people try to subtly insult a genre of music because they don't like it.  It is, of course, beyond fair for them to say they don't like it, but saying it sucks or implying that people are lame for liking it really grinds my gears.

I know I've been guilty of this in the past, but now, I try to avoid saying those kinds of things.

I'm sorry if my post came off as me saying that people who listen to that genre of music are lame.  That was not at all what I was trying to say.  The only comments I was making there is that I don't like it and I don't understand why others like it.  It's just like people who say they don't like chocolate, I just don't understand how they couldn't like chocolate when it's so delicious!  That doesn't mean I think they are a loser and or lame, it just means I truly don't understand.  I would never ever insult someone else just because of their taste in music.  The majority of my friends here at Rolla like old rock n' roll music (like ACDC, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, etc) and I absolutely hate it, but I don't think they are lame.  If I thought they were lame I wouldn't be their friend!

The little bit Ender said about me being an Emo Elitist Teenage is completely false.  I am not emo, I am most definitely not an elitist, and I am also not a teenager.

How do you not understand it?  Their tastes are different then yours.  What more is there to understand? :P

That is essentially what I was saying, they have different tastes.  I just worded it a little different and made it a lot longer.

Seemed like he was referring to the "so many people" who like the Metal genre, particularly since his post follows as a response to your question.  I guess it was more ambiguous than I thought.  *shrug*

Yeah, I understand what you mean.  I wasn't completely sure either if it was a joke directed towards me or not.  But in the PM it seemed pretty clear he was talking about this particular joke.  Who knows / cares?

Haha! I was listening to the radio today, and I was really pissed at the "popular" station. I think I've told most people that I can't stand hip/hop and rap, and lately the station has been playing more and more of it. As there really isn't any other rock radio station my little alarm clock/radio picks up, I put it on a country station, and WOW! I was impressed. Every song I heard was tolerable to good. The Wyoming is getting to me.  :-\

Since this is my intro thread, I figure it might be a good idea to ask intro questions--those that really don't warrant an independent thread--here.  So here goes.

Question: Should I be concerned about bringing about animosity through statement of political views?
That is to say, if I express an all around view point which is strongly disagreed with, which a cursory examination of recent posts in the politics section suggests some might not be able to understand my maintaining, and argue it persistently and effectively (subjective, I know; let's just say I'm not simply spouting off talking points), should I be concerned about being flamed, decried, ostracized, and shunned?
Not that that bothers me too much; I would just like forewarning.

There are really two questions in this.
1) Will you be "flamed, decried, ostracized, and shunned?"
2) And, if you are, should you be concerned by it?

I would suggest posting about whatever you feel like posting, in any terms you feel like using, and then let the reaction take care of itself.  If it is overwhelmingly negative, then you should either ignore it, decide this isn't the best place to express your views, or respond to it.  Of course, no-one can specifically answer your questions in advance of you making these posts.

Cool. Yeah William the Conqueror is pretty awesome. English wouldn't be the way it is without him. Oh, and do you mean Henry VIII?

Yes.
