Brute forcing case

Here's the problem: I have a case insensitive password (say, "mypassword") and I need to figure out what the case-sensitive version is (say, "MyPassword"). The problem is, doing a check is fairly slow, because this involves network traffic.

So, I'm trying to come up with a way to brute force the case in the most efficient possible way. That means we're going to try putting one character uppercase first, starting with the first characters ("Mypassword", "mYpassword", "myPassword", "mypAssword", etc). Then, two characters uppercase, starting with the first two, "MYpassword", "MyPassword", "MypAssword", "MypaSsword", etc)

More generically, here it is in binary (where the 0 represents lower and the 1 represents upper) -- I put decimals beside them being I'm trying to find a pattern:

0010 (2)
0001 (1)
1100 (12/C)
1010 (10/A)

I'm trying to figure out the most simple way of doing this for an arbitrary length password, while maintaining this order. Computational power isn't a big deal, since the bottleneck on this will be the network traffic. That being said, I want to avoid recursion or anything nasty like that.

I don't care what language it's in, since I doubt anybody knows the actual language I'm using (Lua). Pseudocode or just an algorithm is as good as code.

Any thoughts?

<edit> One thought I had was to take standard binary (0001, 0010, 0011, 0100, etc) and sort it by the number of '1's in the number. That would work, but it feels a little ewwy.

So, I implemented the idea I had in my edit, and it actually works pretty slick:

Haha, shut up. I'm awesome, that's why.

I figured I'd come up with a hacky solution, just to get me by, then discovered it's actually kind of nice. :)

I'm open to suggestions on how to improve it, though, on a 14-character password this way takes noticeable time. I'd like a solution that's O(n) instead of mine, which I think is O(nlogn) or O(n2) or something.

If it's an arbitrary length of n, and you're trying all combinations, it's definitely O(2^n).  Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're calling "n"?

If you want to try all combinations, there's no way of escaping that, either -- unless you want to omit certain cases.  If you want a less exact but more efficient approach, it might be worth looking into breaking up the password into dictionary words and trying common ways of capitalizing the words or something.  I kind of doubt that'd be a reasonable approach, but who knows. :)

Yeah, I suck at defining 'n'. I had meant 'n' to mean the total number of combinations, so 2^length. Maybe. I don't know. :)

For each set of '1's, it's going through the full array from 1 to 2^length. So for 1 '1' it searches the array, then for 2 '1's it searches the array, etc. So I guess the order, where 'n' is the string's length, is O(2^n * n), which isn't significantly worse than the best case, O(2^n).

I don't know, it just doesn't feel like the best way of doing it. :)

Like I said, there's no way avoiding exponential time if you want to look at every case.  There are 2^n cases.

Luckily, passwords aren't very long, right? :)

I've actually dealt with generating combinations of fault scenarios in power systems.  I discovered combinadics as a useful way to represent combinations.

Each component of a combinadic represents a 0 or 1 or in this case a L or U.

I derived two algorithms with this idea.  One can generate all specific (n,m) combination.  The other recognizes that combinadics are analogous to traversal on a perfect directed graph whose edges are defined by:

You can further make this efficient by noticing sub-stack states repeating later in the sequence.  You could also force the stack size to be no more than N/2 and generate two case masks, where one is the complement.  You'd introduce this into the code
