I just use an old 233MHz P2 with FreeBSD...but probably could build an Intel Atom router for approximately the same as a brand new router. Best of all, it won't suck.

I'd personally do as Joe suggests
You might be right about that, Joe.

Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

You'd just need to invest a few hours of your time to assemble it and set it up.
What would he get out of it that a store-bought router couldn't provide?I'm very sure there are many things that a BSD router can do that a store-bought router cannot do. That's not the question, though.

Which then begs the question... why is it anywhere near worth the effort unless you're intending to do something "fancy"?Having any box that you can SSH into can be used as an SSH tunnel. There's no reason it has to be a router? :\
Effort? This is fun! I like to reveal other options no matter how impractical you or others might think they are.

I'm just pointing out that it's probably not a great solution for someone who doesn't want to fuck around with BSD for two days just to get a working router. ;P

He already did.
I should have. (there was no smashing, I shot it)
