to this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121274
But I have no clue if it would work with my computer.
any Help or suggestions on a new graphics card would be appreciated.
thanks guys.

Your primary concern is probably your motherboard.  If it doesn't have the kind of bus the video card uses, you're SOL.

Interface     PCI Express 2.0 x16

is what the website says.  I'm pretty sure that's been the standard for several years, so you'll probably be okay.

Just a note PCI-X 2 is backwards compatible with 1.0
You'll probably want to check with your motherboard vendor to make sure you have PCI-X. You should if your PC is fairly modern, but some OEMs like to cheap out.
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

I believe your motherboard won't be PCI-Express 2.0, only 1.0/1.1.  AFAIK, it will still work, just it won't be running as good as it could be.

His current graphics card is definitely PCIe.

Yeah, PCI Express just slows down the card speed if it's not 2.0 .

Man I have no clue what you guys are saying haha. I just wanted to know if it would work or not hahaha.
I sort of get it now tho. But How do I check if my Mobo is PCIX2 or not. Should it be labeled if I open up my Pc.

As others have mentioned, even if it's not PCIe 2.0, it can still work.

If my understanding is correct, PCIe 2.0 (how the video card "communicates" with the motherboard) has a faster transfer rate than its predecessor, but PCIe 2.0 cards will work with previous versions of PCIe.

To see which bus your motherboard is using, try looking up your computer's model on Dell's website.  It'll usually have a list of hardware.  Unfortunately, sometimes they use different hardware with the same model, so I'm not sure you'll get a definitive answer form there.  Do you still have the order paperwork (and/or e-mails) from when you got the computer?

Also, make sure your power supply is powerful enough to support your graphics card.

Ah, that's a good point.  I'd imagine he'll be fine.

What do you guys think? 400W? 500W?

350 is usually bare minimum, I'd recommend 400W - 500W if he has a lot of things in his PCI slots, a lot of fans, etc.

I'd love to hear what you base this on.  Assuming you have only one processor, one video card (by far the 2 most power hungry components actually powered by the PSU) and a sane amount of internal peripherals, 350W is plenty.

I was just throwing numbers I'd heard elsewhere out there.  I'm by no means an expert on this subject. :)

My motherboard itself lists 350W as it's bare minimum assuming regular use, and it comes with integrated graphics, I'd assume that a video card would put additional stress onto it.

It's not like PSUs are not cheap, you can always have more, but you can't really afford to have less.

That's true, but I'm going to trust Chavo's input on this, lol.  He probably knows more about this stuff than just about anyone on these boards. :}

Lol, your motherboard does not consume 350 watts of power.  Your motherboard itself consumes very, very little power.  A very high end CPU might hit the 150W range (not overclocked) and an extremely powerful video card might hit 100W (again, not overclocked, no SLI or CrossFire or other multiple card configuration).  Hard drives will consume a maximum of about 25W apiece, though they are getting lower with green tech being hyped (SSD drives are much lower in most circumstances).  Optical drives consume more power at peak load, but almost nothing when idle, so I usually exclude them from calculation (your CPU will almost never be peaking at the same time as your optical drive).  That just leaves memory, PCI devices, and USB/other external peripherals, all of which contribute minimal amounts.

If you want a good calculator that has results very close to my own calculations, try Thermaltake's.  Most of the hype regarding wanting a 'more poweful' PSU is drawn from a trend of poor quality PSUs 5-10 years ago when barebone machines were popular.  Because these PSUs were of low quality, they did not handle peaking very well (booting your computer is actually a peak time since voltage regulation logic has not yet initialized) and therefore gave the impression that the user needed a higher power PSU.  In this circumstance you actually need a higher quality PSU.  I'd take a $90 400W Thermaltake over a $50 600W no-name PSU any day.

If you're willing to spend a little more, this card is probably a step up for about the same price.  Only problem is, it requires a 6-pin power connector.

Also, make sure your power supply is powerful enough to support your graphics card.
Probably want to check the amperage on the power supply too.

Not an issue.  The 6 pin connector is just two standard 4 pin connectors and it's easy to find an adapter.

Sigh....

P = I * V

(hint: V is constant for this application)

edit: You'll forgive me for being less than nice about this, but misinformation regarding computer support in general is a huge problem that wouldn't exist if people wouldn't inform others without knowing what they are talking about first.

Yes, it's not really a problem unless he doesn't have the adapter.  I'm pretty sure most video cards come with them now though.

Seeing how most computer manufactures don't put very big psus in their computers, it still wouldn't hurt to check.  I don't know a lot about electronics, but I'm pretty sure you don't want a psu with 12amps on the +12v rail powering a setup that consumes up to 15 (not saying this is the case for him).

My point was that having a discussion about how much current a power supply draws is the same discussion as how much power is consumed / can be delivered; a discussion we already had in this thread.

He does have a point, though; a 350W PS can not deliver 350W at 5V. It's a maximum power output, total.

I think I will build a new computer from scratch. over the summer when I have money.
