Obesity vs time spent eating
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:50:39 pm »
http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/obesity-and-the-fastness-of-food/

In countries where people spend less time eating, there are a higher percentage of obese people. The conclusion is that people who eat faster tend to be more obese.

Although it's an interesting statistic, I disagree with the conclusion. It's a "correlation isn't causation" problem. I think it's simply that the same lifestyle factors that cause both of these, and that they don't cause each other.

But that's just my take. :)

I've heard that before. The way it was explained to me was that if people eat fast, they tend to overeat. Of course, I'm the fastest eater I know, but that's just because I hate to spend time sitting around eating food. There's always other stuff I can be doing.
errr... something like that...

I tend to eat fast, but that's just because school lunch periods from grade1-8 forced me to do such.  Bad habits are hard to lose.  :(

I'm with iago... in countries where people have no time to eat, there are more McDonalds around.

If you make a point of having long lunches, you're probably not going to spend that time over a big mac and fries.

Edit: I just looked at their graph.  Their data completely sucks.  I don't think you can make any useful conclusions from this (as far as obesity(eating time)).  Of course, you can conclude that socialist countries have significantly healthier populations.

I'd agree there.  People who are eating quickly are probably in a hurry, dont have time to cook and therefore eat quick food (usu unhealthy microwave or fast food crap)

I can also pull the observation of generally, European and Asian countries have a lower obesity rate.  No matter the time spent eating.

When I go to the US, it's very obvious that there are a lot more overweight people than in Canada (that isn't to say there aren't many in Canada).

I could really notice coming back from South America...
All of the women were beautiful down there, and you almost never see a fat one. And then I stepped off the plane onto US soil... :(
