DEFCON, anyone?
« on: June 23, 2009, 09:02:33 pm »
I'm thinking (in fact, strongly considering) going to Defcon this summer. It's in Las Vegas, the last weekend in July (July 31 and August 1, iirc).

Anybody else thinking of going?

<edit> Details:
* July 31 - Aug 2 at the Riviera hotel
* $120USD at the door (less if you get them early, I assume)
* $89/night for 2 guests at the Riviera

If I had the money I'd love to go, though there'd also be airfare since it's in Vegas.

I know Sidoh is going, and I'm tempted to allocate some of the ~$1.6k in relocation reimbursement I originally had planned on using to buy furniture with.  But I'm a bit stingy with money, and the $120 at the door is a bit hefty IMO.  It comes down to what the round trip plane tickets are going to cost me and if I have to end up using the majority of the vacation time I've accrued.  It's pissing me off that I can't get to the DEFCON website because of Connection Interrupted errors to get more details.

EDIT:  Goddamnit.  It's so lame that both Otakon and DEFCON do not fall on my off-Fridays (I work a 9-80 schedule and get every other Friday off), and I'm already going to go in on the Sunday before Otakon to make up that Friday's time... I'll probably have to do that for DEFCON too because I don't want to use any vacation time.

If you go, you should catch a 5 hour Greyhound to my house in Arizona, and fly out from there. :D

$80 isn't bad.  I'm surprised it isn't more.

Yeah, it's not bad at all -- but, at the same time, for 3 nights that's $240, plus the exchange on my poor Canadian dollar.. that's pretty expensive.

Certainly do-able, though. But add the airfare ($200 each way + tax and crap) and the conference itself, that's getting close to $1000 :-/

holy fuck.  Yeah, I forgot about Canadian exchange rates and it's technically international travel for you.

Yeah, but I don't mind doing it.. however, sharing a room saves me $120, and means that somebody is forced to hang out with me! ;)

So yeah, if anybody's going and wants to split a room (or, better yet, if somebody's company is paying and is ok with me sleeping on the floor), count me in! :D

I made plans to go in April.  My friend booked a room and I had planned to buy tickets when I cleared the trip with my bosses.  They said it was fine a week or so ago, but I haven't really had the chance or motivation to buy the tickets, lol.

But yeah, it'd be awesome if you came, iago.  I'll spot the foreign fed!

awesome!  It turns out my friend is bringing his girlfriend too, so we'll have four people in our room, haha.

We'll have to meet up!  When are you getting there?  I'm flying in on Wednesday night, leaving on Monday afternoon.

I'm going to be there Wednesday around lunchtime, leaving Sunday afternoon.

I found out that rooms at Circus Circus are cheap++! like, $25/night on the weekdays and $50/night on the weekends. $230 for the full stay :D

We'll definitely hang out. I know a ton of people who are going, it's going to be super cool! :D

Defcon is OVER! An awesome time was had by all. Totally unbelievable, for me. I got to meet, hang out with, and even have dinner with some people I really look up to.

I also went out for a drink with Sidoh and his girlfriend. He got some pictures, which he'd better post here!

We also got some pictures with the Nmap guys, I'll post them when I get 'em. I got some pictures of funny stuff myself, mostly WTFs or Fails I saw in the airport and stuff, but whatever. My favourite Fail/WTF will be posted by Sidoh.. the broken arcade machine. Hopefully his picture turned out :)

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.
