I voted 'no' 'cuz I don't like Vegas. It isn't my thing at all, and if you know me well enough that stand probably isn't surprising. :)

At least I voted 'no' after you decided, though, I didn't want it to affect your decision :D

Yeah perhaps the happenings that occur in Vegas are not everybody's thing, but the point I'm making is that paying for life experiences that you'll look back on for years to come is not a "waste of money." Each person has a different idea of what experiences count...
To be fair, I didn't say he was wasting his money by going (I was just there 2 weeks ago :) ), rather, I told him to be sure to waste money. You can fill in what I mean on your own, but I was mostly referring to excessive gambling (or any gambling, really -- gambling = throwing away money).

I like to look at gambling differently. Set a limit before you start, and think of it like this: "I'm paying X$ to have a good time tonight". If you win a decent amount, stop. Otherwise, no loss because you were just paying for a fun night.

Works for me. I'd rather use that money for something useful. :)

I can have fun for a lot cheaper, and without giving my money to people who don't need/deserve it. :)

I just look at the casinos down the strip and think of how the vast majority of that money wasn't earned, it was just people who wander in and leave all their money. It's a great system (for them)!

Haha! okay, okay, okay, really, I don't think I'll be gambling that much. Probably more going out with my friends!

That's cool. It's a cheap place to go to/stay, since the hotels like keeping it cheap for gamblers. As I said, that subsidizes the rest of us. :D

Gambling has to be approached from a perspective of having fun, engaging in a game of strategy, pushing your limits of risk, adrenaline rushes when you're putting it all on the line, and the sweet sweet feeling when it pays off. It's like any other game, only it involves money. Consider it a barrier to entry, sort of like running and working out a lot to become a good athlete for other sports. In this case you just need money!! Seriously though, a weekend of it isn't going to hurt anybody as long as he doesn't go betting his life savings.

You make it sound like it's possible to win while gambling -- it really isn't. It's always a downward trend. That's why the companies there can spend billions of dollars building new casinos -- those billions came from somewhere.

In any case, like I said, I think there are better ways to have fun without throwing money away. But whatever. :)

It is possible to win, but it's not likely. I'd say its better to not approach gambling with the mindset that you're going to win money.

gambling = throwing away money
I play Texas Hold'em, and I'm up over $1000. If you consider how much money I've spent on gas getting to and from the casino, and food bought there, it's probably somewhere around $0.
