It's about a dog that nobody really loved, and how he was given a little bit of happiness on his last days. Very sad.

That is depressing.  I don't understand people who do that to their animals.
The once grove of splendor,
Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.
