New ISP
« on: February 18, 2010, 09:58:15 pm »
Just a heads up, I'm in the process of changing ISPs. In fact, the new guy's here right now doing the installation.

This new one promises to be significantly faster and more reliable (10mbit up and down + 99.99% uptime). Let's hope it's true. :)

This will, of course, mean some brief periods of downtime, especially when I change my DNS entry to point to the new address. But, we'll deal with that when it comes -- I'm hoping to make it as painless as possible, which is why I technically have two ISPs right now.

Damn, couldn't get a signal higher than 8mbit where they mounted it (it's wireless, obviously -- wayyyy faster than anything wired here). It's too late to re-mount it, so he's coming back on the weekend.

From what he's seen, he figures I can get 20 - 25mbit once it's all set up. So you guys should notice a considerable speed increase on the site. :D

Hah, I won't.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

So, I haven't moved over the server or anything yet, because it's going to require some DNS shuffling, but here's what I have:

New ISP:

Current ISP:

So, you should notice quite a difference. :D

And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

Well, up is the important part. :)

Up should actually be the same as down, so I should be able to get to 22mbit up. Dunno why it isn't.

The change has been made. There may be some lag in DNS before you can get here, but if you're reading this it's working. :)

I had the wrong DNS set for the past 90 minutes or so -- the address was 1 off -- sorry 'bout that :)

Let me know if you have any issues or anything.

virtual server hosting - it's cheap, and reliable. the forum does feel a little faster, though.

I can get colo (and a bunch of other stuff) from this ISP for free. I still like having my stuff at home, though, I can do a lot more with it.

Like have it bitch out and cry every time you leave it alone for more than 12 hours at a time?

I'd like to take this moment to express my deep hatred for AT&T:

It's advertised at 10/1 in my area, but, well, you know, AT&T actually providing what it advertises? Unheard of.
Sadly it's the only non-dialup connection available here right now, so they're able to get away with it :(

I switched to a new router today (and moved things around a bit), which changed my ip -- my ip was static to my MAC address. I updated the DNS entries, so before long everything should be good to go.

If you're having any issues or you can't see the site, let me know.
