Name My Rig!
« on: July 09, 2010, 01:08:03 am »
So I'll be getting a new machine in ~week , which means I have to come up with a new name! This will be a laptop dual booting Win7 64bit and Slackware x64 .. I've already got a few ideas, but it'd be neat to see what anybody here came up with

Requirements:
One of the following themes:
-Star Trek
-Simpsons/Family Guy/Futurama
-Film noir/horror
-Fantasy epics
-Literature
-Sci/Fi

And obviously if you post a name, it'd be nice if you could say to which of these categories it belongs.

I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

Running with Code has a new home!

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

One of my old machine was named Automaton (re: futura series finale or maybe I should call it the first series finale :P) which has been one of my favorites.  Since then I've used exclusively DotA character names because so many of them are cool.  If I include VM names, I've used the following:

atropos
azwraith
traxex
crsyalix
rigwarl
ezalor
lion
dirge
akasha
leshrac
razor
rooftrellen
rexxar
lucifer
naix
balanar
sven

I use the first letter as a loose tool for denoting what purpose I use the machine for and its a system that works really well for me.

In another issue: So I have my hd set up in the following manner:
/sda1 - windows boot partition (100mb)
/sda2 - 80gb windows 7 partition
/sda3 - 40ish(?) gb slackware
/sda4 - 10gb slackware swap
i have a 320gb hd... But Win7 doesn't show the unformatted space and Slackware won't let me cfdisk / fdisk the unformatted space to add an NTFS partition to it. Anyone have suggestions?

Is 10gb of swap really necessary?

Also, you should try Gentoo. Slackware failed me last week on my new netbook, so I installed Gentoo and I love it. :)

I quite literally just installed everything, so I'm not really in a mood to install something anew. What's Gentoo's 64-bit support like? Also, isn't Gentoo that OS where you have to build everything, or is that something else?

10gb swap: I plan to install Blender (if I can ever get wireless working...) which can take up ridiculous system memory. I figured having extra is never a bad thing when dealing with software like that.

Have any ideas about the partition issue?

Because everything is compiled from source, Gentoo supports 64-bit better than any other OS. You can tailor everything to exactly what you want in terms of libraries, architecture, etc.

I see. Well I'll consider it. I hate compiling from source though. It gets tedious and becomes a PITA very fast...

So I have a 320gb hard drive. Of that space, only some 200gb (max) is being used. The other space *should* show up as unformatted space, but I can't seem to access that unformatted space in either Windows 7 or Slackware 64-bit. The point of that unformatted space is just so that I can have a shared space between *nix and Windows, without having to worry about accidentally modifying the Windows partition. cfdisk SHOWS the unformatted space, it just won't let me write to it. fdisk also has that issue. Windows 7 doesn't even register that there is unpartitioned space on my HD.

It's more like, instead of a package manager, you have a package source manager. It handles everything for you. The only PITA you can complain about is how it takes forever to set up your system.

Ah. If you ahd to compile everything from source manually I would hate doing that after about 3 minutes of installing..

The nonpartitioned space is showing up as "unusable" to cfdisk, fdisk, and parted. I don't understannnnnnnnnnd. Should I try partition "nuke your machine" magic?

Update!

So Windows, in all its infinite wisdom, decided that when I wanted to take the unpartitioned space and make a partition out of it, it would instead pick the slackware install drives. -.- Thank god I put LILO on the MBR and not the partition!

Reinstalling shit sucks.

I still don't know why the partition didn't show up in Linxu, but that's alright I guess.

I think you misunderstood. Windows install: partition X GB for NTFS and Windows boot partition. THEN Linux install: partition Y GB for ext4 & swap. THEN: wanted to take the unpartitioned space (~80GB) and format that to NTFS using Linux. Linux didn't even see the damn unpartitioned space, and once I got it to do that, it didn't let me write to the partition table no matter what I did. Windows let me write to the table... and also decided to overwrite my Slackware partition. Win.

Always install Windows first and let Linux clean up it's mess.

More fun: windows (or my slackware CD) randomly destroyed the boot partition! I had to fix it with an Ubuntu livecd ... I'm wondering if I'll ever get this dual boot thing working again. Son of a bitch.

Yeah -- I'm not saying it makes any sense, but its is possessive and it's is a contraction for "it is" or "it has".

Well, another update: windows sucks at partition recognition and management. When it set up that new partition for me, it deleted the linux partition. But then, when it "deleted" the partition, it still left it written to the table! I just deleted it with linux and am proceeding to install slackware.. I have a feeling this is going to break windows though. :(

It was the Linux installer's fault.  It should have asked you whether you wanted to modify the MBR or not.
The FreeBSD installer sucks (well it's not pretty), but it gives you the option to leave the MBR alone.  It didn't clobber my Windows boot loader and they coexist happily.  I'm sure most Linux distributions provide this option too.

Why Slackware?  You want to do hardcore development?  Gentoo is a pure developer's system.  All third party software is compiled so you can rely on all the headers and development tools being there ... and being where they're supposed to be!

Long story short: writing my linux partitions to my hard drive was what broke Windows. I know this because my linux install failed halfway throughout (before any MBR was touched) but Windows was corrupted at that point.

Re: Slack vs Gentoo .. familiarity, not having to compile everything from source, widely supported, etc. I'm not saying it's the best distro or the worst distro. It just works for me, and that's really all that I want. Linux that gets out of my way and lets me do whatever I want.

Uh, that can go either way. It can "get out of your way" and handle everything and you can "do whatever [you] want" by surfing the web, watching porn, etc.

But I understood what you meant! :P

That's because you overwrote the MBR.  Don't overwrite the MBR!

Edit: Use Windows' boot loader to boot Linux (i.e. Don't overwrite the MBR!).  Look for EasyBCD.

I've heard good things about Gentoo, but I've also seen people border insanity while trying to install it.  My roommate last summer spent two days trying to get sound to work on his laptop.  I kept taunting him with an Ubuntu disk... he finally gave in and installed Fedora and said he had no regrets :P

I just don't understand the argument "gets out of my way."  What is it that some of the more friendly distributions do that you don't like (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, etc...)?  They work so well.

Let me phrase it this way: in *any* other OS that I've used thus far (Ubuntu, Suse, BSD's) on a fresh install I have to do some tweaking to get to runlevel 3 (no GUI), have the applications I regularly use, and change the fstab/init.d to run "system essentials", so to speak.  Slackware just seems to set things up right for me when I've used it... I'm sure that, as Gentoo requires, having to jump through and vim every config file would greatly help my knowledge of Unix. But that's just a huge pain in the ass (not to mention I JUST reformatted both Windows and *nix onto this machine). If it "just works" why bother changing?

I assure you I'm not as stupid as you seem to think. The first thing I checked was the MBR -- even after rewriting [the unchanged version of] my MBR, Windows had unloaded the hard drive controller and simply would not accept one until I wiped my HD and started anew.

I don't think you're stupid at all.  I don't know about GNU fdisk, but BSD fdisk can write the MBR.  Sounds to me like you accidently wrote over the MBR when you wrote the new partition table.
Another possibility is that you didn't set the Windows bootloader partition to the active partition.

GNU fdisk does not, by default, write the MBR. I made plenty of changes to the partition table before Windows stopped working. Part of my issue in the final stage may have been that the CD I used was corrupted, so it may have claimed to write the partition table correctly but not actually have done so. I didn't get far enough through an install without having every process fail, so that's what I am suspecting happened. And then when Windows did not boot up, I jumped onto an Ubuntu livecd and used ms-sys to repair the Windows 7 MBR, but the SATA hard drive controller had been unloaded at that point. Even when I forced the driver, Windows did not recognize what I was doing. In the end, because it just made lots of sense, I reformatted everything. It works. Slackware is set up exactly as I would have a Gentoo system set up with none of the hassle (all the old stuff was kind of my fault), Windows works just fine with LILO, and life is good.
