Spammers....
« on: March 25, 2011, 08:57:02 am »
So, I did something kinda bold today: I deleted every account with 0 posts. I already turned on "approval required".

Hopefully I didn't accidentally anybody's real account. Sorry if I did. :)

They'll get over it.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

I do it all the time on forums that require a registration to download. I think I'm going to start registering with a totally BS username and set the email to sitename@wjlafrance.org, so I can selectively disable email addresses if the spam gets bad. :)
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I use a wildcard email address like Joe. I'm pretty sure that spammers have caught on to the blah+blah2@gmail.com thing by now (if not, it won't be much longer :) )

I guess. I just use my username @ gmail.. It's my "everything junk goes here" account, so I never care if I get spammed there. I check it every other day, if that.

I kinda like getting spammed on one of my "special" accounts because then I know who lost/sold my email address. :)

Yeah, that's pretty nice.  I guess you could have a default mailbox of junk@yourdomain.com and then sign up with sitename@yourdomain.com.  It'd be interesting to collect data on that.

Because then we don't know when the business we're registering with is passing out our email addresses.

Pretty much my thought. I have pretty solid spam filters and a pretty secure password, so I'm not worried if people end up getting my e-mail address. I'm sure it's on Google somewhere anyway. And if I'm registering with a BS username I probably don't care if the site I'm on ends up selling my e-mail to someone, since I don't care about the site to begin with. It's mostly convenience for me (I don't register on too many sketchy sites anymore) so I don't mind using my regular e-mail addresses.

I know, right?  This is pretty much the sketchiest site I use.  I mean, it's run by a gay Canadian, and there's also a gay sailor.  There's a guy who can't get laid who lives in California.  It's a pretty scary place altogether....

With no mention of joe. I'm shocked. Appalled, even.

EDIT -- Fun fact of the day: There are 1017 members awaiting approval. Eff that nonsense.
