Lakers won. Woohoo.

My brother's computer was so horridly hosed with viruses that, upon booting into the Welcome Screen, the entire system would hang. It's really impressive. So, boot into safe mode, I found that some DLLs had made their way into every single process that ran. One of them, if anyone is curious to look at it, can be found here:
http://newby.dont.backstab.us/misc/welatije.zipI've never actually given up on trying to repair a computer, but in this case, I was sure I couldn't win. I gave up.
So I decided I'd install Ubuntu on it. That way, they can't *possibly* fuck the thing up. Ubuntu is really nice and easy to get going. And it's super user friendly. The installation process could have gone smoother. I wanted to keep the Windows partition on there, and the option to "install Ubuntu and Windows side-by-side" allotted approximately 2GB to Ubuntu. So I had to go into advanced mode to set it up. But after that, everything installed, the "migration assistant" worked wonders, and even the graphics card works flawlessely.
So yeah, aside from random pieces of software that don't work on the package list, it's pretty slick. And there's even a "guest session" so that my brother's lame ass friends can surf all the porn they want (or whatever it is they do) and they won't break this.
AND I now have a computer I can ssh into and use irssi with. Again! Yes!
(Let's just say it has come a long damn way since I first tried it way back when in 2006 when I had Ubuntu 6.06.)
