New Orleans is Sinking
« on: September 07, 2005, 12:14:47 pm »
I don't know if the Tragically Hip are popular in the US (they're a very good Canadian band), but they have a song from many years ago called "New Orleans is Sinking" (on the album Up to Here).  It's funny how so many people are surprised that this happened, when in 1989 a Canadian band already saw it coming.  Anyway, here's the lyrics:

Quote
"New Orleans Is Sinking"

Bourbon blues on the street loose and complete
Under skies all smoky blue-green
I can Forksake the dixie dead shake
So we dance the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom What's wrong? What's Going On
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said" Hey North you're south shut you big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about thoes years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had My hand in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above and said hey man thanks
Some time I fell so good I gotta scream
She says Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said I swear to god she said

My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

I think maybe the song was referring to a metaphor of moral destitution, as opposed to a flood of water....

It which case, it's an amazing coincidence :)

I was thinking that too, but taking it literally is more shocking.

Uh, they've known about the threat of massive flooding in New Orleans for over 30 years. So I doubt they knew first and I also doubt anyone was surprised by what happened as a result of the storm. It was all very well predicted and they have 'dooms day' scenerios where 40,000-60,000 people died in New Orleans from a hurricane.

You're right, I've seen an article about that.

You'd think they'd have a better backup plan, though.  It seems like this caught them totally off-guard, as soon as the hurricane was coming they should have been getting ready to mobilize help, not just ask people to leave.

As shown through the expectations that zorm said, and from what I've heard elsewhere, one the main flaws in their plan is that, well, too many people survived. Instead of focusing resources on cleanup and such, they had to save all those morons that stayed and lived.

I saw them in concert (in Moncton, with the Rolling Stones) and they didn't play it. ;D Infact, I don't think the radio stations play it anymore either.

Well, playing it now would be in very bad taste.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Newby, that is awesome.

Topic:

New Orleans is below sea level, also. That is another reason as to why the citty flooded so well. I'll blame the french for that.

Having a sub-sea-level City is stupid. That's why Oregon's cool. We've got mountains.

I'm surprised that terrorists didn't blow up the dike.  That would have been clever!

Luckly, I'm not a member of a foreign intelligence office. :)

But the US can still tagged me, hopefully they come to my house so I can tell them where to shove their charges.  Would that be an "act of war"?

Yes, then we would retaliate with another act of war.
