It's odd.  What got me to first give Linux a try was how well I thought KDE was put together after using it in the math lab at school.

Now FC4 starts with Gnome.  I don't know how to change it over to KDE... but I don't think I want to, either.

If I had to pick one of them, I'd go with Gnome.  But no thanks!

If you like the look and feel of Gnome, though, you should try xfce.  It's a lot like Gnome, but much much lighter on resources.  I really liked using xfce when I used it.

MyndFyre, in Ubuntu, I simply did sudo apt-get install kde, and it handled downloading depdancies and everything. Do you have some sort of apt-get program in your distro?

I believe that xinitrc is only used on Slackware.  But I could be wrong about that

What it stands for has absolutely nothing to do with which platforms use it in their startx script. 

I thought I read somewhere that it was Slackware-specific, but apparently it's not.  Oh well!

KDE is installed.  I just don't know how to change to it.  But like I said, I don't think I want to, either.  Gnome is pretty good.

Gnome is crap. xfce (lightweight GNOME gnome lookalike IMO) or KDE for life.
