Bill Gates is a smart man in my opinion, maybe not the greatest programmer but a hell of a bussiness man.

I wouldn't say "smart".  Maybe "lucky" is a good word.  There was an opening caused by Sun and other commercial UNIX provides shooting themselves in the foot, and he grabbed onto the hole.  Not only did they fill the gap, they managed to convince (brainwash?) the vast majority of people that they can't live without it. I don't know how they got a company started on DOS and Windows 3.1, though, since those were the most horrible OS's ever made, even compared to the alternatives at the time..

Bill Gates is a circumstance of right place at the right time, that and he owned 90% of the stock when it shot thru the roof. Lucky bastard.

Busniesses believed that they couldn't live without it becasue IBM used it on thier PC's.  Yes this was a really lucky break for Bill Gates, but he was a smart busniessman in the way that he demanded that his Operating System (well, not really his, but thats another argument for another day) be lisenced, instead of selling the entire source code to IBM like they wanted.
