Jarhead
« on: November 05, 2005, 02:35:21 am »
This was a huge disappointment.

Jarhead was to the current war what M*A*S*H was to Vietnam, except it didn't take any kind of humorous approach, and was absolutely unforgiving.

Expecting action?  It is a war movie, isn't it?  Tough, you're out of luck.

Quote from: Previews
Everyday I thank God for everything He gives me in the Corps.  Hoo-rah.
Actual context: they're sitting and watching the oil fields of Kuwait burn.  Then Jamie Fox says:
Quote from: After that quote
I mean, where else do you get to see stuff like this?

WTF?  I'm pretty damn sure people sign up for the military for reasons other than seeing the freaking oil fields burning.

The movie was very well-made; it was much like a documentary.  However, it was very much slanted: never once was Operation: Desert Shield or Operation: Desert Storm portrayed as anything but worthless.  Why?  Because some people were bored, and because people's wives and girlfriends left them.

I have news for you: if you don't expect that kind of thing to happen, don't go sign up.  The military is volunteer.  The main character said early on that he didn't have any other choice; well, no that's not accurate.  He wasn't drafted.  He did NOT have to go into the Marines.  We've heard about it from EVERY WAR EVER.  It happens EVERY TIME.  This movie rubs salt in that wound, particularly for people who have been there.

I found the movie to be in poor taste (for that reason), and overall a very great disappointment.

Odds are I'm gonna see this movie sooner or later anyways, that's just how my family rolls.  But thanks, I'll try not to hate it too much (though JAmie Foxx is a great actor, I'm sad to hear the movie was not so good).

I talked to a couple of my friends who've seen the movie, and they all seemed to love it.  So don't count it out just because MyndFyre didn't like it :)

They're probably really left wing pussies who don't like action, right?

I don't know/care what my friends' political stance is.  Where I live, that's not something that's terribly important.  I'm afraid I couldn't identify a liberal/conserative/democrat/whatever.  The only political-type person I can ever identify is republican, because they seem to be really noisy about being one.

Yeah, when I went to lunch today these dems were out protesting Bush's stance on veterans (saying there isn't enough funding and whatever). They gave my mother a think but she turned it down so I took it and read it, and was going to ask them questions after lunch but they were gone. They had a big sign that said "BUSH HAS DONE NOTHING" and that was the main point of their paper, with every paragraph saying "And yet, Bush has done nothing."

:(

Oh, and Republicans like to brag about being Republican because they want everyone to know that they're the reason America r0x0r$ and ish.

So what side do you consider yourself to be with? Possibly one of the smaller groups or would you just vote for whoever you think would do a better job?

Well you shouldn't vote for somebody JUST because of their party, you should vote for whos going to do the better job. Most of the time, though, that person just happens to be Republican.

I never said I vote for someone because they're of my party, however, a lot of people do.

I don't consider myself with any side.  Last election, I liked the NDP (New Democrats Party) for our province because they are good economically.  And they've done a good job, there's been a lot of development in the city/province, but they are too nice to the poor.  We have a national election coming up soon, so I'll have to do a little reading up on the parties.  Or not vote.  Either way..

The people I've talked to so far seemed to think it was an awesome movie. I know the local group of Marine DEPs is going to see it sometime, it shall be interesting to see their reaction to it.

I thought it was a good movie. Sure it wasn't exactly historically accurate, but it was good.  I thought they'd kill a lot more people.
