We get a holiday but I have to work 11 hours today.  Yay!
I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

Yeah, I have to work 8 hours today. ;)

And yes, we have a holiday.. but nothing really special happens where I am at.

Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

They make a pretty big deal out of it here.  They have big services at all the schools where veterans come and they play songs for them and tell poems and all sorts of stuff.  And we wear these red flowing things  (poppies) that represent that soldiers who died.  And all donations that people give (you give a donation when you take a poppy) goes to veteran things.

My mom used to work at a veterans' club as a bartender.  Today is an insane day there.

Hehe, that's pretty neat.  I noticed the flags were at half mast, but other than that, we're still on a normal schedule.

Yeah, everything is normal around here.  I think we had a something for them at a big football game, but that wasn't even on Veterans day..

*sigh*

We have the day off from school here and the lab is off as well. Yesterday LANL had a ceremony to honor the veterans that included honor guard to raise the flags(which I did) and PTLA providing a gun salute(If you never been ~10ft away from one of these before when they fire you should try it. You know its coming but you still jump 5ft off the ground anyhow).

Today there is a ceremony in town that included PTLA, the NJROTC unit, CAP and others im sure. So its not an absolutely huge deal but at the same time its not like its just another day here.

The County is closed for business today (I work at a County Library facility), but the Town, who owns the library building and whom I work for, is open for business.  Evidently we traded this day off for the day after Thanksgiving.  I'm okay with that.  :)

Wow, and I thought that opening certain stores today was being rude to the memory of our fallen soldiers.  But that totally takes the cake :)

I'll ask my dad (a Vietnam vet) if he thought it was rude that the Town conducted business.
I meant the dead ones, and I meant the fact that the town traded away the veterans' holiday, but yeah, I'm curious what he says anyway.

During one of the wars (World War 1 or 2, I forget), poppies grew on the graves of fallen soldiers.  They started wearing them as a symbol of their fallen friends.  When the war was over, it became a tradition for veterans to make/sell fake poppies in the month or so before Nov. 11.  There was a poem written about them called Flander's Fields, by McCrae, which starts "In Flanders fields, poppies grow, between the crosses row and row" or something.

You can kinda see one in this picture of my dad:
http://www.javaop.com/~iago/ospap/show_picture.php?picture_id=68
And Google has one on their Canadian site, if you can get to it:
http://www.google.ca/logos/poppy05.gif

Just for reference, I Google'd the poem:
Quote
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
                                In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
                                In Flanders fields.
I really like the poem, myself.

I know what a California Poppie is... I know it's illegal to pick them if their not yours hoho. I never knew about the symbolism though. Thanks :D
