Why the hell did he run to the back of the boat? If you've been sailing for 20 years and someone is shooting, you should know that you can easily push them over and the gun is useless. :)

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

I know, he was a handicap and couldn't run, nor stand up after getting to the ground.... or.... He wasn't twenty years old.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

Yeah! He had a hook for a hand so he couldn't have picked up the gun!

No, I'm kidding.  The answer is still out there :P

How can you tell? What did he do/say that shows you that?

The way he referred to the front/back of the ship? (i.e. not calling it by their proper names, I am not sure what the names are, but i.e. port = left starboard = right)

Yeah, close enough.

What would a sailor say instead of front, back, and floor?

Eddy said he'd "never done anything like it", which, in some contexts can be interpretted as "didn't do it".  Coupled with the title "Tall Tales", and John saying Eddy was telling a "tall tale", this is most likely the case.  Also, a "tall tale" is defined as being humorous and exaggerated, which this isn't.  It's obvious from this that Eddy is lieing and has a severe Oedipus Complex.

Also, he never got up.

[edit]
Stern, bow, deck.

Him saying he's a sailor would imply that he's in the military? :)
