You're welcome.

I was just going to ask, is /dev/dsp writeable by you? That could cause it.

And for anybody who feels like having some fun:

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp.  Playing with dsp can provide moments of fun! :)

This is where the "yes" command comes in handy, too :)

yes "a" > /dev/dsp
yes "aa" > /dev/dsp
yes "aaa" > /dev/dsp
yes "aaaa" > /dev/dsp
yes "aaaaa" > /dev/dsp

etc.!

null is a better band than urandom, IMO. Of course, if you like death metal, urandom is the way to go.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

Null doesn't write anything to STDOUT, if you try reading from it, it will close immediately.  So it won't make any sound.  Unless that's what you want, in which case, typing nothing would make more sense..

Okay, problem again.  Trillian makes the 'beep' when I send messages, recycle bin makes the sound when you empty it, but games like Starcraft and WoW won't make any sounds.  Winamp doesn't make a sound either and comes up with:

Anyone know of any free sites that scan your computer to find the most up-to-date drivers?

Do you have the cd that came with your sound card/computer?

Try uninstalling the driver and then searching for it.  It might find it automatically, or you might need to go to the site for your sound card and download the driver manually.

The advantage of Windows here: most hardware companies support Windows :)

If if its making a beep, it doesn't detect your soundcard, or doesn't know how to use it. :P
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...
