It's a fact that New Year's day is exactly 7 days after Christmas.  However, in 1939, the year of the outbreak of World War II, Christmas fell on a Monday and New Year's fell on a Sunday.  Why?

New Years was still 7 days after Christmas, only it was 1/1/1940. Since the riddle pertains to 1939, the date thing was able to happen since New Years was on 1/1/1939. The question is trying to trick you into counting ahead (and giving you December 32nd, which doesn't exist) instead of thinking about New Years occuring at the beginning of the year.
