Have a picture

It's probably the single most impresive system my school has to offer, which I suppose isn't all that bad, considering we're a poor district and those phones generally run about $600 a piece.

The bottom line is that phone cables and network cables are both twisted-pair cables.  They have different ends, sure, but they're still interchangeable.

At work I was confused++ to find a phone line running into a network patch panel.  I had no idea that phone calls could go through patch panels! :)

Hehe.

Have you seen the administration interfaces for those phones?  Simply put, it's really incredible.  It's one of the most powerful admin panels I've ever seen.  Really neat stuff...

For what phones?

I only saw a phoneline from the ground (which eventually runs to the phone company's box) running into a patch panel which, once we checked, went across the street.

Cisco Avvid IP phones.  A lot of companies use them.  It's a really impressive system, overall.

It's funny when my boss is transfering something from his house to our school (he lives ~5 miles out of town, but has a 802.11 "beam" dish to connect his house to the school's network) and he's talking to someone over the IP phone.  It sounds so jarbled because his bandwidth is being eaten, it's really funny.  That's how he tests his connection, too.  He'll push the "voicemail" button and if the voice comes accross really crappy, he knows there's a problem. :)

Haha nice.

When I left, they were just starting to architect some VOIP stuff.  Because Manitoba is such a large network, there are a lot of security risks and stuff, so it takes a lot of research and planning to get it going.

Hehe, I'd bet!  I know it took our school about four months to have it fully implemented.  Even then, they still had some things that needed worked on.  It runs pretty smoothly now, though.  The funny thing is that they use PoE (Power over Ethernet), so a lot of teachers wonder why they can't move it from one network outlet to another in their room!  It'll only turn on at the one it was already at!  "Damn demons!", they'll say.
