Burning PSU smell
« on: December 23, 2005, 11:40:17 pm »
Ok, for the last few days my computer has been emitting a smoky smell.

Today, I've narrowed it down to my power supply (where the power plug plugs into) unit, mainly because:

1. My computer doesn't smell outside of the fan on the PSU
2. My PSU smells really bad if I stick my nose next to it.
3. My computer is nice and cool, except for the PSU, which is burning.

Suggestions? It seems to work, except it's emitting smoke from teh fan!

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Buy a new PSU.

Too simple. Anything more complex that may fix my current one? :P

Have you tried blowing out the dust with an air compressor or something?  If the dust is burning, it could produce a pretty nasty smell. :)

Never thought about doing that. I guess tomorrow I'll buy a compressed air can and shoot it out. :)

That's not it, because the dust on my computer parts has done that before and it doesn't stink, it just... drives my computer crazy.

But then again, it wasn't on my PSU.. just everything else.

I was going to say... I've smelled some pretty funny things because of burning dust. :P

ROFL!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA. owned^max (hah)
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

Pretty much. Oh well. I'll blow some compressed air into it, and if all else fails, 5 year warranty for the win. :)
