The miners were rescued

That's pretty spiffy that they found 12 of them alive.

Sad that the one man died :(

um, ok, this topic was started after I saw on tv last night that 12 were found and they were good.

News was wrong/miscommunication.

12 dead, 1 alive.

In any case, as cruel/blunt as it might be, who cares about 13 people?

More people than that die of starvation every minute, but I don't see you crying about them.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Exactly.  As disgusting as that is, it's 100% true.

In any case, as cruel/blunt as it might be, who cares about 13 people?

I see your point, but it's because they're American.  Americans have direct access to the media and the media eats this kind of stuff up.

Alternatively, haven't you ever seen the commercials for the starving kids in Asia/Africa?  They may be much more impersonal, but at least it's recognized by the average American.

12 dead, 1 alive.

I was talking to my friend about this today and he said it was the other way around and that the media had reversed the survival ratio.  Stupid media.

Yeah, last night it was 1 dead guy & the 12 (I honestly can't say I ever heard them say that the 12 were alive though).

This morning I was confused & didn't realize the TV banner said 12 DEAD 1 alive.

EDIT:
This article sums it up nicely I believe

It wasn't simply a media error, the recovery crew knew that there were 13 people, and they had found one dead. They went alon further and heard moaning underground, and figured that it was the 12 people (which is also how they knew where to look). The guy reporting it got a bit ahead of himself at the church and said that all 12 were alive, word spread to the media and such. When they went and dug down to the moaning, it turns out that there was only 1 person moaning, the others were dead.

Technically, the media errored. Technically, I errored when I told my dad that the miners got rescued, but its cause I recieved bad information, as did they from the safety reporter. The safety reporter errored by assuming that the people were still alive, however you wanna look at it, someone errored.

hahahah @ my dad today. (when i got in the truck) "Hey, did you hear about those 12 miners?"
 "uh, yeah"
"yeah well guess what."
 "what?"
"theyre still dead!"

That was an example -- find a statistic for how many people every day are murdered in the US, or killed by guns, or whatever, and I'm sure it's more.  I'm just making a point about the media blowing stupid things out of proportion.

Yes, and last time I checked nobody cares about those commercials.  I don't know anybody who's ever brought that up in a conversation, but I've heard about 13 trapped minors brought up at least once.  It doesn't make sense!

So very, disgustingly true.  I guess it's just one of those "luck of the draw" type things.  If the media gets a story they like, they'll play it, even if others thing it's less significant relative to other available ones.

It's still so disturbing.

Yes, its simply because the media needs a new story to cover and talk about. This happens all the time with some notable examples being the Scott Peterson case and the Cindy Sh...whateverthefuckhernamewas story. One station picks a story and everyone else decides to follow suit in covering it. Most of the stories they cover aren't newsworthy, but they happen and get randomly picked to be covered.

Murders go on everyday, we're used to it.

Miners being stuck is something new and not very common, should they just ignore it? Stop trying to argue stupid points. I feel bad for the families.

Yes, it certainly sucks to be their family.  I don't disagree with that.

But when you become accustomed to having murders every day, and families losing members due to violence every day, you have a serious problem.  Not just with you, but with your country.  People should care about murders, not just ignore them.

Murders ARE on the new though...

But why would "Oh, somebody was shot in Dubois, ID" be on the news? Murders are covered locally but big tragedys like this definitely make national because it's really a rare event.

It's human nature, not our country.

When you're exposed to a lot of anything, you become accustomed to it.  That doesn't mean we recognize it's a problem that needs fixed and should be taken care of; it doesn't mean we are insensitive and don't care about the people shot, it's just we have a hard time relating to people's feelings when someone gets murdered.  It would be hard to shed a tear for every person murdered.  Also -- the media ignores them, not our country.  The media may be a part of our country, but it's not like we chose that the news contains things like this tragedy in place of a shooting in down town LA.

"big tragedies"?  12 people is not a big tragedy!  As much as it sucks for the families and people involved, I wouldn't consider it a big tragedy!

I don't see how you can consider 12 people dying from a terrible accident a tragedy, whereas 16,000 murders/year isn't such a big deal.

I agree with what you say.  But I still think it's a big problem that the media doesn't care about it anymore.  2,986 deaths in the World Trade Centre is considered a national crisis, and enough to evoke a war.  1,383 deaths from Hurricane Katrina was, yet again, considered a terrible tragedy.  But 16,000 murders/year?  Eh, it happens.  I think there's a problem there.  The American government has a serious responsibility to start looking inward and solving their own problems before mucking about overseas, if you ask me.

Maybe we should send all the black people to Canada. That would solve half of the problem.

Yes, and an update on that (how it happened), the guys that were down in the cave said "We found 12" but said nothing more about their condition. Someone in their control room heard this and figured they were alive and started calling people, and telling them. The reason it took so long for them to tell the people that they were dead is because they wanted to find out who the living miner was. Honestly, what a moron to start calling people.
