Upgrading question...
« on: March 13, 2006, 07:58:10 pm »
Since there is no Windows discussion forum... is there a way to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP without getting everything deleted? Quik said no, and I believe him, but Warrior hasn't said anything, and we all know he's the god of the Windows world.

I have an 'upgrade' disk, so I presume you can.

98->2000->XP ftw.

I wouldn't lose anything at all? Want to explain to me how that works? I think I have a 2000 Disk somewhere.

I found: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316639
Has anyone tried that?

Programs can be reinstalled. Data files can be backed up.

The biggest reformat problem I've ever had (I've never upgraded an OS, except on my Mac, which doesn't count) is patching that huge bandwidth user we call World of Warcraft.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

See?  There ya go, I guess you can do a direct upgrade!

Typically you only lose data if you format the drive.  I would recommend you do so, but short of doing so, an upgrade should work.

WoW uses hardly any bandwidth.

IMO, formatting is the way to go, but I don't feel like installing gigs upon gigs of stuff again.
