Playing Lossless Files with Windows?
« on: March 30, 2006, 05:37:55 pm »
Well, I recently downloaded an album that was FLAC not MP3... Winamp can't play FLAC, neither can anything else on my computer (iTunes & WMP).  Anybody have any ideas on how to play the FLAC files?  I might just end up playing 'em with XMMS, but that'd suck because my other computer has no audio card and thus sounds shitty.

Yes it can.

Mine's better, Joe.  I use it, it has to be.

I'm actually sad at xmms lacking the 'library' feature of Winamp. I'm also sad for amarok sucking.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I wish..that would own. Hard.
Of course, I could download the source, find out where it checks for files, and then download + "install," but I'd end up screwing it up somehow.

Personally, I can't stand XMMS compared to Winamp.  I use Media Library too much.  Plus, XMMS is just too plain and feature-lacking for what I do. :P

By the way sidoh, that plugin owns.
Only problem, it made Winamp close.. so I had to restart Gaim because Windows blows and doesn't have drag+drop taskbar.

Yeah, it's worked flawlessly for me.  I did the same thing as you, accept I was aware it was FLAC (I couldn't find an album that had a decent amount of seeders other than that one).

Only problem, it made Winamp close.. so I had to restart Gaim because Windows blows and doesn't have drag+drop taskbar.

I don't get it.  Why did you have to restart Gaim? :\

Because I always have in my taskbar

Winamp | Task Manager | Gaim | Gaim Chat | Gaim Away | other apps

ALWAYS like that. :\ I don't know why, I get OCD about it if it's not like that.

I don't even know what that is.  The only thing I need to do besides listen to songs is to search for a specific song.  I don't know about Winamp, but on XMMS it's just a matter of pressing "j" then typing all or part of the name.  I don't need any other functionality.

I had all of those in the systray.  I hate wasting room.

Media Library is basically a library of all the media you have (haha..).  It's useless if you're like me and you add all the files you download to your playlist and save it.  I've used it twice in my life, and both were to search for extremely old rap songs (Dr. Dre, in case anyone's wondering) that I never bothered adding to my playlist.

Neither do I, but I like the additional functionality that Winamp provides.  The Media library has several different search functions (plus a bunch of automatically generated lists that are sometimes handy).  It's actually a bit easier than that to search for a song on Winamp, but since it's so easy on both, it's pretty irrelivant.  I've used XMMS quite a bit.  It works, but I don't like it nearly as much as Winamp.

Everything is Windows' fault.  For example, the entire kernel breaking before I restarted.

Stranger things have happened to me on Linux.

It sounds pretty similar to XMMS's 'j' searching.  I don't know about automatically generated lists, but you can easily generate one with a search.

Not really important, though.  I just find Winamp too bulky.  I want to play music, period.  I don't want a program that does anything else.

I want more.  That's why I like Winamp more than XMMS. :P

I'm currently using amaroK. I don't like the way it does it's music library, but it's better than nothing (IMO).
