Research Paper
« on: April 24, 2006, 12:03:54 pm »
Well, I have to do a research paper and I have no idea what I want to do.  I would like it to be dealing with a controversy computer related/tech related topic, but I don't know exactly what I want it to be.

Any suggestions?

Ooh, it has to be either Persuasive or Problem & Solution type research paper. -.-;

Privacy?

Tragedy of the Commons as it relates to the Internet?

OpenSource versus ClosedSource?

The first two, I can give you a couple papers each to read, we talked about them in school.  The third one is just an ongoing debate.

The impact on regional stability of regime change?  I have a 64-page thesis manuscript you could review.... ;)

I really like the third idea.  I am looking into that one right now. :)

"How safe the Internet isn't for people who are clueless."

If I coud go back and rewrite my english 111 research paper I'd do it on something like "How equality based on gender is a scam", or something like that.   Of course I'd have to make it pretty clear that we both have the same basic human rights, but I'd point out mental/phsyical differences that should categorize men/women differently in regards to somethings (driving).
I'd mainly do this only to tick my instructor off, she was a leftist.  (She already accused me of trying to argue that point)

LINUS VS BILL..
fight.
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

Linus isn't the worst, he doesn't seem as confrontational as others.

Now somebody like Stallman, he seems like he'd be more into the fighting thing.

Hahaha, as long as Bill had it at his $100m house, he'd win.  The house would just shoot some laser at the other guy.

UMD wasn't a next-gen disc system though.  It's just a handy way for the PSP to rock.  And technically it won.  Do you see any other UMD formats around?  I think not.

To compete against what, itself?

There aren't any competitors to the PSP using discs.

Another topic I just thought of: laptops in classrooms.

They had a big thing about that at my University this term, but I didn't pay any attention.  They want to force every student to buy a laptop and bring it with them (like local colleges do).  I think that's a horrible idea, though.

What?!?  OMG!  I support open-source!  I just don't think closed source is as bad as you do!  :P  [edit]I also don't necessarily support GPL[/edit].

I was joking :P

I don't blame you about the GPL, but that's a whole other subject :P

They just wanted laptops in a single department -- Engineering.  Every student would pay for his or her own as part of their tuition, and it would come with all the software they need.

A lot of engineering colleges require laptops.  I know Drexel, Rowan, and Rutgers all require laptops at the expense of the student for their engineering colleges, but, in all fairness, they also provide all the software free including Windows (sadly required), AutoCAD, and the such.  One of my friends is even required to have a tablet, which is a bit rediculous...

Cool!
What points of it are you going to look at?  Security, market, user friendliness, etc...?

Sidenote:
Our state gave 7th graders a laptop (state money) to use until they graduated highschool...they have been recently recalled here in my city so that the school can keep them for school check out.  I think both uses of laptops here are dumb, there should just be desktop labs for kids to use.
Our local university, I believe, gives you a laptop 'free'.

Yeah, that's what they want to do here.  But the software isn't free, stictly speaking, the costs are part of the cost to purchase the laptop.

Not at Drexel!  They cover XP for students, and then offer student versions of the rest off of their server.

Well, I am going to cover:
- What Open Source is
- What Closed Source is
- Comparisions between the two
               - User Friendly
               - Security
               - Organization and how it works

And that's basically all I can think of for right now.  Any ideas would help a lot. :)

Make sure, if you're making an argument paper, that you address which you think is better, or at least which you think is better in given circumstances.  ;)

If look back through the history, they probably have at least 2 or 3 topics about that every week.

I'd personally do as Joe suggests

OSPAP is a program I wrote, and it's under the BSD license.

JavaOp is another program I wrote, and it's Public Domain.

No joke, just acronyms :)
