More MySpacae backwardsness
« on: May 04, 2006, 12:54:54 am »
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/05/03/mass.myspace.reut/index.html
Mass. wants the user age raised from 14 to 18, this comes after some 27yrd old dude found a 13yr old girl.

...uhm, 13 isn't 14, gee golly, how did she ever register!?

MySpace* is just fine, I think it's the parents, schools, librarys and any internet provider to monitor minors on the internet.

You're taking this "I'm an adult" thing a little too far if you ask me. You were a minor a month ago. Would you want your parents spying on everything you do? Even if you don't have anything to hide, you still don't want them reading it.

Also, I'd consider myself an adult. A minor, yes, but a young adult. I'm not a kid anymore and I don't need my parents to tell me what to do and what not to do while I'm on the internet.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I think that MySpace is the stupidest thing ever made.  We should be telling people, especially younger people, "don't post any kind of personal information online!", instead we're saying "post everything you've got".  It's a really dumb idea.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

If you read the MySpace FAQ(?) then you'd see that it says to not post personal info (addresses & the like)

I agree with iago.. MySpace is the amazingly stupid..
The once grove of splendor,
Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

Does it say anything about names?  Birthdays?  Pictures?

Any of those can be dangerous.  A name + birthday gives you a decent starting point if trying to steal somebody's identity or tracking them down.

Ive seen way more than that on myspace: pictures, adresses, home towns, mailing adresses, drug use on camera, nudity on camera...

Alot of people don't use their real name, I suspect that they might just want you to use a screen name or just your first name.
Pictures would be easy to find someone, if you know where they are.   You can find where people are by lookin at their classes, but you can restrict who can see your classes (& rest of your profile too)

Myspace is like medical marajuanna (there is no deeper meaning in here..). When used properly it's nice - you can chat with your friends, etc. But when improperly, you can get fucked.. quite literally in this case.

I think posting a picture of just yourself (e.g. white background) is pretty innocuous.  It would be extremely hard to track someone down on that information alone.  On the other hand, I would still discourage those under a certain age (15?) from doing it, if anything because it may suggest to predators that you are actually a vulnerable and attractive? minor who is worthy of pursuing.

Wrong.  Marijuana is used for medicinal purposes.  As CrAz3D already said, it depends on how it's used.

Give me a credible source that tells me how marijuana is used for "medicinal" purposes.  Wikipedia doesn't count.

Society really is fucking retarded. They're is nothing wrong with myspace, first we blame video games for muders, rappers for murders, and now myspace for what, rape and worse? Come the fuck on guys. Even if a girl got a message on myspace from someone she didn't know, it's her decision to message him back and not ignore it. Don't blame the bullshit, blame the actual people.

Ok?  So you don't think extremely violent videogames could have a bad influence on children?  You wouldn't mind if your 8 year old children were surfing television and made the so called conscious "decision" to watch scat porn on a regular basis?  For the most part minors are quite vulnerable and poorly informed: sometimes they are not in a position to make responsible choices.  We can't guide people through life indefinitely, but I think a little guidance at a young age is certainly a good thing.

I wouldn't want my kids using myspace.  For the most part, I think it's a disgusting, degenerative use of time.  I think there's definitely something wrong with myspace, although I respect its right to exist and the right for adults to make the choice to use it.  Just like a sex talk hotline, I think it is an inappropriate medium for kids to express themselves.

I've played video games since I was a very young child, never once in my life did I have a thought to go do things I do in a game in the real world, even when I was a young child. I don't see, at all, how myspace is a "disgusting, degenerative use of time." I personally use myspace to keep in touch with friends from my school, and my area. You think it's inappropriate for kids to express themselves? That goes against everything this county knows, it's freedoms.

Children often rebell what they're taught in their younger years.  My dad tried to get me to like golf.  I went with him until I found something I was passionate about. :P

The thing is, our generation wasn't "brought up" on any particular OS.  For the last 20+ years, the kids understand technology better than the parents.  When our generation has kids, they'll have parents who understand technology.  That should be interesting...

Children often rebell what they're taught in their younger years.  My dad tried to get me to like golf.  I went with him until I found something I was passionate about. :P
My dad's the same way.  I'm not a huge fan of golf, but I do golf with him.  It's more like a way to spend time together, not a game I really enjoy.

I think we'll see very similar behaviors.  When I talk about understanding technology, I understand that there are consistent paradigms of operation and expected outcome surrounding technology.  A generation is long enough for a paradigm shift, meaning that there will be newer, more advanced ways of interacting with technology by the time our generation has kids.

I think we can already see evidence of this.  While I still prefer to use the DOS command line to perform particular operations, and I think most of us prefer to not use voice-control software to use the computer, these things will change as the paradigm shifts.  Particularly for people who begin using the computer at a time when voice command is not so imprecise (I know this is an aim of Vista; whether it will happen, though, I am dubious), they'll likely tend to use it much more frequently because they won't be as frustrated with it as we have been.
