More MySpacae backwardsness
« on: May 04, 2006, 12:54:54 am »
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/05/03/mass.myspace.reut/index.html
Mass. wants the user age raised from 14 to 18, this comes after some 27yrd old dude found a 13yr old girl.

...uhm, 13 isn't 14, gee golly, how did she ever register!?

MySpace* is just fine, I think it's the parents, schools, librarys and any internet provider to monitor minors on the internet.

You're taking this "I'm an adult" thing a little too far if you ask me. You were a minor a month ago. Would you want your parents spying on everything you do? Even if you don't have anything to hide, you still don't want them reading it.

Also, I'd consider myself an adult. A minor, yes, but a young adult. I'm not a kid anymore and I don't need my parents to tell me what to do and what not to do while I'm on the internet.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I think that MySpace is the stupidest thing ever made.  We should be telling people, especially younger people, "don't post any kind of personal information online!", instead we're saying "post everything you've got".  It's a really dumb idea.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

If you read the MySpace FAQ(?) then you'd see that it says to not post personal info (addresses & the like)

I agree with iago.. MySpace is the amazingly stupid..
The once grove of splendor,
Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

Does it say anything about names?  Birthdays?  Pictures?

Any of those can be dangerous.  A name + birthday gives you a decent starting point if trying to steal somebody's identity or tracking them down.

Ive seen way more than that on myspace: pictures, adresses, home towns, mailing adresses, drug use on camera, nudity on camera...

I didn't say that people don't do it...I'm just saying the MySpace (& other online friend places) discourage it.

If they don't encourage posting your name and picture, why do they have seconds for your name and for pictures?

Alot of people don't use their real name, I suspect that they might just want you to use a screen name or just your first name.
Pictures would be easy to find someone, if you know where they are.   You can find where people are by lookin at their classes, but you can restrict who can see your classes (& rest of your profile too)
