Local LANs
« on: May 22, 2006, 12:40:43 pm »
Well it is a sad day in my life. Yesterday the Local Gaming Cafe closed for good due to bullshit from the land lord and the owner (A very good friend of mine) cant afford it anymore. Iam so bumed out. I use to love going here and just gaming the shit out of His PC's [And he had a Linux box for the programmers, OWN3D] It was so much fun becuase he would hold WCIII tournys almost every month and everybody played WoW and CS.

I was just wondering if any of you guys go/went to any good LANS that you rember in your heart. "sigh" The good old days.  :-[

Convince him to find a new place and open it back up. :)

Let him know how much you appreciated the place; that usually means a lot to people who've put as much work as he did into a business.

This town has nothing like that.  There are 2,000 people that live here, so yeah... :P

Yeah, I have the same problem.  I live in ParkVille which is inside the Kansas City (Missouri) Metro, so if I went into the city I bet I could find some... But, I am lazy. :D

Anyway, sorry to hear that your place was closed down.
The once grove of splendor,
Aforetime crowned by lilac and lily,
Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;
A leafless oak grasping at eternity.

That's not always easy. Blizz charges licensing fees to have things like WC3 tourneys.  :-/

Yeah, I've heard that before.  However, since he's probably already done that, I would imagine he'd either already have the privilege or would have less trouble attaining permission.

We had a similar thing happen here except it wasn't a LAN center.  It was Skater Island, which if any of you have ever played Tony Hawk im sure you know it.  It was one of the first huge indoor skate parks in the owrld but the landlord didnt like skateboarding so he evicted the owners.

There has to be a legal standing for evicting a tenant, there has to be a breach in the lease, the landlord cannot evict someone due to not liking a certain sport.
Back on topic, we have a LAN pictures I don't go there much anymore though, since they only play COD now, and only playing COD for 6 hours isn't appealing to me.

It's the landlord's property.  As long as he's not causing financial harm to the person he's evicting, he can do whatever he wants.

Maybe in your state, but in Massachusetts its not this way.  I just happen to know this because my dad owns a few buildings in Boston.  The only times he has been successful in evicting tenants was when they didn't pay rent for about six months after the state stops picking up the tab.

Oh the bawls. I miss the bawls he sold as well.  :P

Anyways I just talk to him last night once I heard the bad news and he said the landlord is going to raise the rent up to 2,500 a month due to kid's Vandalising his property. Which I find a bunch of bullshit since I have never seen that place dirty or unkept before in my 4 years of going.

There's laws here about raising rent.  It can only be raused by 4% a year or something like that, unless there's a very good reason.  I guess that's one advantage to living in a socialist-style country. :)

But see, that doesn't really make sense.

Here, as renters pay into the mortgage on a property and property value goes up, the equity vs. loan ratio goes up, and rent shouldn't have to go up at all, because the landowner already is making more per month without raising rent at all.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen here; I'm just saying that it's not that common.  Not at least here in Arizona.

Speaking of property value rising - we bought our house for ~$180,000 two years ago, it's now worth close to $400,000 with minor things added.

I forget, did you say you live in Arizona?

Last year we had a boom market.  Definitely good for sellers.  If that's what it's based on, your house is probably (actually) worth $350-$375.  The housing market has been kind of screwed up by investors -- because there was such a boom last year, all the investors have tried to dump their houses.  Now, there are a lot of houses on the market by less-than-motivated people, which puts value down a little, but not by much.

I don't see this becoming ridiculous any time soon, though -- like California.

Or you can do all that, and raise the rent, and make even more money.  Because of the difficulty of moving, once somebody is living (or running a business from) somewhere, changing location is not appealing.  As a result, your landlord could raise your rent fairly high and people will continue to live there.  That happens as the time, as far as I'm aware, so not allowing landlords to raise rent by a lot works out better for the renters.

Of course, if they do a major remodel or anything else that clearly raises the value of the apartments more than the normal amount, they're allowed to raise it by more than the legal amount.

On this one I'm going to have to say Canada is less socialist then Massachusetts, and more specifically Boston.  The renters are allowed to raise the prices, but if they do a lot the state picks up the tab, its not uncommon for a tenant to be paying $400/month for a $4000/month apartment.

Well this LAN is located in Califorina so I am sure the laws on upping the rent is differnt.

My current house & my mother's condo has gone up in price (++)

market value we purchased house at (2001): 575,000
market value we purchased condo at (2003): 450,000

now,

house: 900,000
condo: 600,000 (or something of that order)

factor in improvements (about 35,000 in remodeling, construction, and AWESOME lawn for both places)

fyi, i live in san jose (california, near quik/ergot).

You think that's a good deal?  My grandmother bought her house in Somers Point (near Ocean City) in the 60's for about $8,000.  Her lot is currently worth around $950,000.  It's rediculous.

Real Estate is crazy in Las Vegas as well. When i was living there, Houses that I saw going up were selling for close to 100,000. Now I heard some of the Property Value on these house "Take note these houses are close to the Las Vegas Strip about 1 mile south of the Luxor" are close to 2.5 million with little to no remodeling/construction done to the property.
