I think you should've asked your parents to wait to buy you that laptop (like, when you actually need it - two months from now). It would've been loads cheaper

Maybe.  Things tend to stay expensive in laptops for much longer than they do with PC's, though.

Of course it does.  I've been a technical assistant in my school district for four years.  I've seen a lot of new laptops bought.  I've done the builds on about half of them.

I assure you that Dell laptops "still work."  They're actualy some of the best I've seen.  We've bought DakTech, HP, IBM, Compaq and Gateway.

That said, I'd like to hear any valid, supporting reason you have for your silly conclusion. :P

i prefer compaq

One of the first PC's my family owned was a Compaq.  It was terrible.  I've since had extremely biast oppinions against any computer they make, even after they were bought out by Hewlett-Packard.

HP's no better than Compaq. ;)

I like Dell's service plan; the only thing I'd buy from them is a laptop, though.

Haha.  I've never owned an HP machine, but the few laptops I've worked on made by them were good.

Yeah, I think I'd agree with that.  I like building my own PC's for obvious reasons, but I think it'd be foolish to attempt the same with a laptop, especially given my experience with the required skills to do the same for a laptop.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Oh, nice!

That's actually what I originally thought, but then I noticed that it was more money to have XP Pro installed in place of MCE.

Gateway laptops are garbage, I've had nothing but bad experiences with them, but their desktops are alright.  I'd like to buy all my own stuff and make one, as opposed to buying stock with upgrades, but I just don't have the money :\

We've only had two Gateway laptops come through that I can think of at the moment, but they both seemed pretty nice.  I only used them to do the base OS install, which, of course, isn't a very good representation of their reliability.

My dad's Gateway has (so far) needed the battery replaced twice, the charger replaced, the screen-clips replace, and the screen hinges fixed.  It is less than a year old.

My ex's Gateway needed the battery replaced, the DVD drive fixed, the screen hinges fixed, and the charger replaced.  Also less than a year old.

Both were different models.  Both suck at life.

Wow, that's terrible.  I'd be curious to hear reviews from other customers who own the same model.  I haven't heard any complaints from either of the two teachers using the gateway laptops, but they're used pretty lightly.

When you have a machine that unreliable in such a short amount of time, you begin to wonder if it was worth the price, even given the limited time warranty.

Intel Core Duo is a dual core processor; Core Solo isn't, obviously.

I don't know if there were major architectural differences in the different families of pentium processors, but there were Pentium 4 dual core processors out months ago.  I don't necessarily think they could be called "Pentium 5", but I could be wrong.

Just got it today! :)

I really like it.  The screen is huge! O_O

There's a hotel right next to my house.  I think the tool that set up its wireless network was pretty stupid -- he didn't enable WEP.  Free intarweb for me!  I'm downloading the WoW patch across it as I post this.  I don't know if it's common for smaller hotels (that don't buy the software that requires validation or something similar to prove that you've paid a fee) to leave WEP disabled, but I'm not going to complain! :D

I'll have to update this after I play WoW.  My 1.5 year old computer can play it with the graphics cranked @ a pseudo-stable 30 FPS (the video card is newer; it's a NVidia 6800 GT -- this laptop has a 7800 Go), so it'll be interesting to see the performance difference.

You never got back to us on the update, pssh!

So I just recently got a laptop, its very nice, its a Toshiba Tecra A7-S717.
Specs are
Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.8Ghz)
Intel 10/100/1000 + Intel Wireless A/B/G
DVD Super multi drive
15.4" LCD
Came with 512MB PC4200 memory, replaced with 2GB PC5300
Came with 80GB 5400RPM SATA drive, replaced with 80GB 7200RPM SATA drive
Only semi-downside is the built in Intel graphics, but oh well, I'm not planning on any heavy gaming.
Price: $1,236 before upgrades
