I noticed Krazed's wishlist, help me with one...please

I think in a while I'd like to build a desktop.

I'm thinkin maybe a 100gb hd...or like 2 60's.
7" flat screen
I'd like to stay with an AMD processor...I dont even know about speeds
maybe 256mb vid card?...
1gbram?...


Honestly, I dont know for sure what I want.

I know I want it to last me a while before upgrading, but I also dont want mega expensive.  Suggestions?

Honestly, the price difference from 100gb to 250gb is maybe $20.  You'd be much better off getting a 250gb, and that way you can partition it off if you don't intend to use all of it.
I severely hope you don't want a 7" LCD monitor.. that would be roughly 800x600, maybe 1024x768.  Not that great.

No.  A dual-core processor has two logical processors (a set of registers) and some parts of the processor are shared.  That's why there are two "logical processors" inside one chip.

Finding a board that supports two is difficult if you want to have good non-server hardware.

would you recommend a dual core processor or just a regular processor....I'd like to put this together myself.

Yes absolutely.

I would recommend either an Intel Core Duo or Pentium 4/HT (hyperthreading).  Both are dual-core processors.  I prefer the P4 over the Core Duo at the moment for desktop PCs, although the Core Duo is impressive with its low power consumption.

If I were to go from scratch (not barebones even), what all do I need that goes in this beast?


-Case
-Power supply (500w?)
-Cooling fan (how fast & all?)
-mother board (do I need something that says it supports dual core processor?)..what all else might I need with that any way?
-dvdr/cdrw drives (I think i can find this)
-1gb ram is what I want to do
-250gb hard drive (what speed/brand do I want of this?)
-I THINK I want a 128mb vid card (do I want more & what brand/model?)
....what about sound card & USB ports & the like?  any recommendations?

Anyone know of a nice list of parts I'd need to get a working machine?  Like a hot-to, also

It really depends on how much you want to spend.  I could give you a list of parts for a good computer, one that will definitely run Vista, for instance, and do games great (much like my own), for (probably) around $1500.  I could do a parts list for a smokin' computer for about $2500-$3000.  And I could even step up from that for $4000-$5000.

So far I've been lookin @ AMD 64 x2 3800 or 4400...like $160 difference, 3800 ought to be more than enough.
Also have been lookin at 1gb sticks for ram.
A decent video card to game (I dont game much) on & watch videos with decent quality.
160 or so gb hard drive maybe..maybe 200 or so
