Lucifer vs God
« on: July 17, 2006, 12:38:33 pm »
Well, it comes up in His Dark Materials (trilogy by Phillip Pullman (I think)), but basically here is what he said happened:
God was the first angel to come into existence.  He was nothing special, aside from the fact that he was first.  When other angels came to exist, God said "O, I made you, because I am all powerful", and basically tricked every angel into believing He created them.  Lucifer, another angel, discovered the truth, and spread the word.  Soon, heaven was split in two: those who sided with God, and those who sided with Lucifer.  God's faction won, and cast Lucifer and his faction out of the kingdom.

More simplisticly, it's "God's a liar and Lucifer is correct".  Thoughts?

As a Christian, I personally wouldn't ever believe that, because I have faith in the Christian(In my opinion, true) version of things. However, if someone believes in God in the Christian sense, I don't think they would be able to disprove that version of events.

We're here for some reason.  There's your answer.  This topic isn't about why people exist, it's about conflict within the ranks of the angels.

His Dark Materials was an excellent fiction series.  It's definitely one of my favorite series of books I've read.

While it's an interesting idea, you should remember that it is a fictional series (not saying you don't, but I really don't think its something that should be posted in the religion forum).  The guy (I forgot his name, damnit!  I remember the girl's name was Lyria, though!) had a knife that cut into other dimensions because "it was so sharp."

It's not really dark.  They directly contradict Christianity, but so does Da Vinci Code.  It's labeled "Fiction" for a reason. ;)

The first book in the series is The Golden Compass, if you're interested.  It's a good book, but I personally thought the Subtle Knife (second book in the series) was the best one.  The last is The Amber Spyglass, which is also pretty good.

But it seems to contradict Christianity in a darker way, with more reference to lucifer, than The Da Vinci Code. Which wouldn't be too hard.

Honestly, anything that disrupts the fundemental concepts of Christianity have the same level of 'darkness.'  Both cases produce enormous amounts of heresy and basically destroy any hope of Christianity being a serious religion.
