When I didn't add stars it cleared out the whole directory just fine..
Both ways work, slightly differently.  /* removes all files under /, and everything unde them.  / removed /, and all directories below it.  Since you can't remove /, it has the exact same affect.  Makes no difference!

I don't think you got the joke.  And incidentally, you don't add stars.  Plus you'd have to be logged in as root or be using sudo to do that.
