Dilemma....
« on: August 11, 2006, 06:47:40 pm »
Well, I have a dilemma that I don't quite know the answer to. I'm hoping somebody can point out an obvious solution that I'm missing, that would be the best.

Ok, right now, I'm living in a decent sized bedroom, which has my dresser, tv, bookshelf, bed, and desk, and it's pretty much packed in tight.  It's functional, but not comfortable.  Also, it gets hot in summer.

I have the opportunity to move into my sister'd old room.  It's in the basement, and was intended as a rec-room, I think.  It's quite large, and would have enough room for my bed, a full-sized table with chairs, and probably a couple chairs/small couch and a tv.  It's fairly large, and I have the means to furnish it.

Now, here's my problem: the walls are rainbow colored.  The top-half is an ugly yellow, and the bottom is vertical stripes, about 3" wide (although each is a different width) of blue, pink, red, orange, and green, all neon, separated by think black strips.  And I hate the colors, they're ugly and make me unhappy (you know how colors affect people?  These colors piss me off).

Unfortunately, my mom/sister spent days of work painting it all just right and perfectly, and my mom refuses to let me re-paint the walls to reasonable colors.

So after me and my mom spent days cleaning it out, shampooing the carpet, and everything else, I basically told her that unless we can do something about the walls, I'm going to stick with my old room.  I didn't realize how badly it affected me until I actually spent a decent amount of time in it.

Can anybody think of some way to fix the problem?  I'm trying to think of some way to hide the walls or something, but nothing is coming to me.  I definitely can't survive in a rainbow-colored room that looks like it was painted by a 12-year-old on acid, but I don't want to give up a far-more-comfortable room either.

Any ideas?

I thought about covering the wall with some kind of paper, but I'm pretty sure that would look terrible, and probably take a long time to do :-/

Uhh.. Get drunk and paint it anyway?  That way when your mom is like "Omg, you painted the room" you could be like "I was drunk?".

Lay now forevermore slender;
And all winds that liven
Silhouette a lone existence;

Taught sheets!  You can get large sheets of fabric and hang them from pressure rods or support bars (or something) from the top, with additional ones at the bottom.  All you have to do is use a screwdriver, so it's not a big hassle.  Granted, it may look odd, but it won't be fugly, unless you pick the same colors or whatever.

Moth other answer is get some wallpaper and ducttape it up so that you can [eventually] take it down easily with the behind wall in-tact.  And additionally: "It's my room, I'll paint it if it damn near gives me a seizure!"

You could paint penises on the walls in my room and as long as I don't have a girl over, they wouldn't bother me.

I don't know. If it's more room, I'd personally move into it. Who cares what the walls look like?

He won't have a seizure. Just an acid trip.

Do what Ergot suggested. It's the only reasonable solution if you really can't stand the colors. Make sure the butcher paper is thick though. Otherwise it'll show through! :P

Wallpaper might work, and this butcher-paper thing seems promising (now that I've looked up what it actually is.. :)).  I'll post more info as it becomes available.

After reading your post, I came up with a solution really similar to Ergot's.  At schools, they have big rolls of paper ~3 feet wide.  If you can get one of those, you could completely cover the wall with a color of your choice! :D

From what I understand, that's "Butcher Paper", which is exactly Ergot's solution :)

Nah.  Butcher paper is only brown.  Art paper comes in all kinds of solid colors.

According to what I read on Wikipedia, it can be "uncolored (having natural light brown color) or white [..... and] butcher paper used for arts and crafts is available in a variety of colors.

I guess it's not really the same stuff, but apparently some people consider it the same.

If the paper you end up using to cover the walls is white, spray paint the linux penguin on it.

Anyway, here's a picture of the room, it's probably not nearly as bad as you imagined but it's bad enough:

You're right, it's not as bad as I imagined... it's worse! :P

You should definitely put white paper on it, though. What I had in mind for my room awhile back was to write inspirational sayings/quotes/favorite lyrics/thoughts on the walls. It may seem a bit corny, but eh.

I ended up spray painting random stuff like Cartman, my name, a couple of quotes, etc., with this glow-in-the-dark spray paint. To see it, I use a blacklight, but without the blacklight, you can't see it. It has a pretty cool effect.

Whoa yeah thats ugly. I'd definitely go with the butcher paper idea or sheets. You might consider making a cardboard 'template' of the lower wall section, then you'd be able to wrap paper around the cardboard and have it look very nice. After that attaching the cardboard to the wall could be done through various means. This would also have the added benefit of hiding the wall better as the cardboard will be thick enough to block it.

If you only need to cover that bottom half, it should be really easy to do in an hour or so with either butcher paper or sheets.  Personally the top half reminds me of "The Yellow Wallpaper" though :/

yeah, it was always called butcher paper @  school.

I hate you for referencing such a lame short story.

@iago: I think it looks fine.  If it's more room, I'd do it because the colors really don't look that bad.

Yes, I have more than enough money, but I don't want to.  I'm perfectly happy where I am, I have as much freedom as I want and I enjoy spending time with my family, nobody bothers me, and I don't pay much.  Call me crazy, but I'd much rather live in a nice house than a crappy apartment, or even than a nice apartment.

Anyway, we settled the problem: there's another room at the opposite side which is kind of a mirror image, except that it is  slightly different shape, more windows, a bathroom, and a fireplace.  And it's uncarpeted and unfurnished, and it's always cold.  It's perfect!  It just needs to be cleaned up/maybe painted (walls are white, green, and blue, but in a logical and nice way, we'll see what we do with them).  And the room they were going to give me will become a workout-room or game-room or something.

My room is an ugly off-yellow/off-white combo. I hated it when we bought our house, but trust me, the walls are a whole lot more ugly when they're naked. I suppose I have more random junk than the normal human, but I've got posters / plaques / bookshelves / paintings covering at least 30% of my wall, then my desk and dresser (and the things on top of them) cover some more. Take my philosophy: if it looks bad, cover it.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

that it is.

but thats why I was thinkin "buy a house".  I know it couldnt be big because you dont have credit, but if you start off small & start buildin your credit now, eventually you'll be able to get a decent house to live in/have a family in/die in/etc
