I don't understand why things have to be so complicated on Windows ... or why you need drivers for generic CD and DVD read and write operations.
There are only two CD drivers on BSD (And I imagine the same on Linux), acd and cd for ATAPI and SCSI devices respectively. Both support most CD and DVD devices that can do either read and/or write on CD, DVD+, DVD-, and DVD RAM and their double density variants.
It wouldn't be the first time for idiocy...you can buy wireless cards from Linksys and D-Link, both can have the same hardware inside, but both require their own special drivers in Windows.
