DVD burning software help.. please?
« on: October 20, 2006, 11:44:28 pm »
So, I need to burn some DVDs to free some space on my hard drive (I've had to use C:\ drive to hold downloaded files now, because I download DVDs).
Nero doesn't recognize my DVD burner for some odd reason.  I have a LITE-ON LDW-411S, and my version of Nero is 6.0.0.0.

Anyone have any ideas?

Haha, weird.  I've been trying to burn DVD's tonight.  DVD Decrypter works pretty well, it seems.

Try installing the drivers?  ;)

How do you know it's just Nero that doesn't recognize it?

I assume it's because he's used it for other things. ;)

...

Because when I plug my IDE interface cable into it and boot up my computer and turn on Nero it calls it a "Generic" drive and won't let me burn ANY type of cds.  Yet Windows recognizes it just fine.

Edit: Actually, I think it may be that my version of Nero is too old..  I'll see which one our beloved jew has and maybe that'll fix it.  I don't want the new, bloated, shitty version of Nero (aka 7).
Edit2:  Does anybody know anything about GEAR Software? (http://www.gearsoftware.com)

not to sound like an ass ...

growisofs --dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0 /path/to/stuff

I don't understand why things have to be so complicated on Windows ... or why you need drivers for generic CD and DVD read and write operations.
There are only two CD drivers on BSD (And I imagine the same on Linux), acd and cd for ATAPI and SCSI devices respectively.  Both support most CD and DVD devices that can do either read and/or write on CD, DVD+, DVD-, and DVD RAM and their double density variants.
It wouldn't be the first time for idiocy...you can buy wireless cards from Linksys and D-Link, both can have the same hardware inside, but both require their own special drivers in Windows.

That's all nice, but I'm not putting my DVD burner in my Linux computer.. it doesn't have enough space to hold ONE dvd, let alone the forty or fifty gigs of dvds I have.

Heh.  It just outrages me that anyone should have to put up with hardware/driver stupidity like that.  I hope you get it working man.

It is pretty infuriating, I must admit.  Though I think it might be partially the software's fault. Either way, I doubt I'm going to be buying a LITE-ON dvd burner ever again. >:(
