"A View From The Top"
« on: October 22, 2006, 10:23:59 pm »
A look on World of Warcraft from someone who was on top of its world at one point.

I actually found that really enjoyable to read.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

People claiming World of Warcraft is an addiction and that Blizzard is to blame for their poor grades, their lost girlfriends and other sorts of failures are retarded.  They are the ones who decided to play the game.  They are the ones that continued to play the game even after they noticed and had been told that their lives were spiraling downwards.

I quit the game when I recoginized the high chance of the time I spent playing it effecting me in a hugely negative way.  It isn't that difficult to quit.  People just get too caught up in the retarded game to take a step back and realize what they're doing.

I guess like any other "addiction", you have to realize it is effecting your life in a negative way before desciding to quit.

Technically, a video game can only be considered a pseudoadiction.  Either way, though, it makes me grind my teeth when people blame Blizzard for their life sucking.

Honestly, if you blame blizzard for it, it is like blaming the person who gave you your first hit of meth. You had the choice of taking it....

Interesting read.  Personally I think the game is too boring to get addicted to.

Once you level up to 60 and then start raiding, that is when you become addicted.

HABP.

And seriously, it's not a view from the top, it's an askew view (haha, a pun).
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

TLDR, but I'll read it when I get home.  I did get through the first few paragraphs, though.

Well, it's obviously not a physical addiction, unless Blizzard adds nicotine to their CDs.  However, I think it can be considered a mental addiction, especially for people who are easily sucked in.

There's no exaggeration when people talk about losing jobs, falling grades, girlfriends, etc.  It does happen, and I've seen it happen.  But on the other hand, it's their own fault.  If it wasn't WoW, it'd be something else.  At least with computer games there's no physical aspect.

Of course, one guy I used to go to school with (brilliant guy, straight A/A+'s, didn't graduate) started playing WoW and doing real drugs, pretty much all the time (instead of going ot school, etc).  I sort of lost touch with him after he totally stopped going to school.

But no, I don't blame WoW.  I blame stupid people. :)

Like I said, that is technically (by psychologists) refered to as a pseudoaddiction. ;)

I know it happens.  I played the game for a year an a half.  I'm very aware of it happening.  Like I've said already, though, it pisses me off when people blame it on Blizzard or WoW itself rather than their lack os self motivation.

But no, I don't blame WoW.  I blame stupid people. :)

Me too. :)

The question is...

how many people have quit WoW recently?

:D

I'm proud to say I never started.

Don't play WoW, play chess!
