So uh, my school got broken into.
This was after the (likely in the millions range) spending of much taxpayer money to pay for 33 security cameras. The reason they weren't effective: They aren't activated until January 1st, 2007. You may ask, what's the point of a security camera that doesn't actually record anything? Especially when it's known that it's not recording? Well, the answer is quite simple, it gives a vandal something to vandalize.
They got on a roof access ladder, climbed on the roof, and broke the glass window into my chemistry class. From there, they stole many chemicals and ravaged the class. They then moved on to the rest of the school. They broke into the office, which is well guarded with doors... with locks... Unfortunately, apparently, everyone who works for every state funded organization that worked on my school failed to realize that hinging doors from the outside is completely pointless, as all it takes to get in is a screwdriver. They unhinged all the doors and threw them across the room, usually slamming them into walls. They stole a bunch of stuff from the office, and then trashed/stole the cameras. So, I heard damage estimates at $10k, but with the price of chemicals, the price of doors, the price of placing doors, and the $3,000 projector that was stolen... I think it was a wee bit more than that.
The cops were there, and conducting a full scale crime scene. My chemistry class was moved to the theater today, where we lounged and didn't do anything. I thought the whole ordeal was pretty funny.
