Challenge?
« on: October 27, 2006, 10:12:46 am »
If anybody feels like a challenge, I found an easy/useless one.

A long time ago, my friend had one of those anti-OCR things on his website.  I think they call them "captcha"s now.  It's when they give you a box with scrambled letters and you have to read them.

Anyways, his was pretty good, but I broke it with about a 10% success rate, which allowed me to make lots and lots of money on his online game, so he bought me lunch (that was the deal.. :)).

I was just working on a project for princessauto.com.  That's a major chain hardware store around here, I don't know if they're in the US or not.

They have an extremely easy captcha on this page:
http://www.princessauto.com/downloadz/

- It's only numbers
- The font doesn't change
- The letters are always the same color, distinct from the background

I think it should be really easy to crack it.  But keep in mind, there's absolutely no reason to do it.

But the contest is: first to write an automated cracker for that image (so you can give the program the URL of the image, and it tells you what the image says) will win pride.

Have fun!

<ps: I expect 100% success rate -- it's not a very hard captcha>

Do you expect us to write an OCR engine?  :\

Considering there are only 10 unique characters (0, 1, 2, ..., 9), I think it'd be a waste of time doing a full OCR engine.  There are easier ways.

I will accept the challenge!

However, it will take some time, as I have work, homework and studying to manage!

Fine by me.

If somebody actually finishes it, I might even find them a little prize... :)

(By the way, I am profiting in no way by this contest -- it's 100% for fun)
